I assist individuals with anxiety and/or depression in developing coping skills and changing the negative thought processes that keep them stuck in unhealthy patterns of behavior. With couples, I strive to develop self-awareness, identify destructive patterns and build communication and "fair fighting" skills, trust and relationship intimacy. My work with couples has included issues of infidelity, blended/step-family concerns, infertility, and life transitions. Therapy with children focuses on building their ability to communicate their feelings and needs and to use productive coping skills to reduce negative behavior.

I work with a wellness approach with depression/ anxiety /mood disorders; as well as addressing life transitions, chronic & debilitating illness, relationship struggles, conflict-management and communication to decrease overall life stress.
I have had the pleasure of working in this field for 30 years and have found that no problem is too big, peace is a position of power, and change is another word for refine/revise/adapt. My favorite quote is: "You have to fall in love with your life." Counseling is a way to learn the barriers to doing this, the tools and techniques for doing so, and shifts in beliefs needed to attain the trickle down effect from this. Clients with whom I work often are seeking shifts in their life/spiritual view, focus, behaviors and coping skills.

If you are struggling with depressed mood, anxiety , or difficulty with relationships, you can break free by being present, opening up to your experience and doing what matters.
Current openings. www.jhigginscounseling.com/contact to request a free telephone consultation. Do you ever feel stuck? Find yourself worrying about the future? Or find yourself dwelling on or re-living events from the past? What about comparing yourself to others, or criticizing yourself or those around you? Maybe creating rules for yourself that feel limiting? You may have tried to solve these problems by getting rid of them, avoiding them, outsmarting them, or overpowering them. While natural, it's often unhelpful with thoughts, feelings, memories, sensations, and urges.

In my experience I have assisted with anxiety , self-esteem, relational problems, stress, depression, grief, & adjustment to new life seasons (ie college, divorce).
I understand the importance of integrating not only evidenced based interventions, but also compassion into the counseling relationship. I am an experienced clinical therapist with almost ten years of experience. My career began in substance abuse and then transitioned into serving individuals with mental health challenges. I use a number of strategies to help individuals achieve their goal with a few tactics as examining how perceptions impact problem behaviors, exploring how childhood events impact current functioning & coping as an adult and working to develop tools for improvement of emotional regulation. I also provide Christian counseling to those who are interested.

Anxiety can be suffocating, depression can be crippling.
Are you anxious? Struggling with depression? I’m here to help. I utilize CBT and Motivational Interviewing with my clients and have been in practice since 2014. I believe recovery is possible for everyone and getting help is the first step toward changing your life. A little about my philosophy… I believe each person has inherent dignity and worth. One of my missions in practice is to help every client to see this reality within themselves and to restore the broken pieces that were lost along the way.

Life can often be challenging. You may feel you've gotten "off track" and need some direction. You may be overwhelmed with things and don't know what to do or how to make it better. It may be starting to affect your relationships, and you don't know how to stop it. You may be wondering what's wrong with you and why this keeps happening, or whether you're depressed. Perhaps you're having panic attacks that come out of nowhere. Or maybe you seem to have developed social anxiety . Perhaps you just don't feel like yourself or aren't content with your life. You want things to be different, you just don't know how to make that happen. You might be wondering whether you're always going to feel this way. You've got a lot going for you, you've accomplished quite a bit, but it still feels like there's something missing. You're not sure what else to do. Most of us feel this way at some point in our lives. Especially when trying to handle the stress of life, relationships and the impact of certain events all at once.

I specialize in treating trauma and PTSD and have 15 years of experience in helping people learn to cope with depression & anxiety .
I understand that it takes a great deal of courage to be vulnerable to others. Some of our life experiences can leave us with feelings of depression, anxiety , low self esteem and self doubt. Despite our best efforts to change, obstacles can be difficult to overcome. I am dedicated to helping you heal, replace harsh self talk with self compassion and connect to the internal strength you already have.

To be seen and known by others is an incredible feeling of connection but it means being authentic and vulnerable. Sadly, we live in a time with the illusion of connection while being more disconnected than ever. You may feel disconnected from others and even from yourself. Though you are a gift to this world, it is often blocked and unexpressed. This may leave you feeling alone and invisible. The truth is, you may be starving for deeper connection and that starvation looks like depression, anxiety , stress, and more. When you are living disconnected, you are abandoning yourself.

During counseling, sometimes a client may experience uncomfortable feelings such as sadness, guilt, anxiety , anger, and frustration.
Counseling varies depending on the personality of both the therapist and the client and the particular problems that you may be experiencing. I want to help you address the problems you hope to address. Often this includes building skills to: reduce feelings of distress, improve relationships, communication with others, and/or to resolve difficult personal issues. In order for therapy to be most successful, you will be asked to work on things we talk about both during our sessions and at home.

I offer evaluations for school related concerns, including: ADHD, anxiety , depression and behavioral concerns.
We all face changes in our daily lives, it just depends on where those challenges come from and how you handle them. Sometimes family, friends or other areas cause one to struggle and seek guidance. Other times it is about improving a break-down in communication between parent and child, by improving interactions and communication. I understand the importance of setting reasonable expectations and helping the family to reach success as quickly as possible. I am a skilled therapist, with over ten years of experience, offering a safe place to explore challenges and make potential life changes.

Creatively facilitating a safe and therapeutic environment for youth and adults, with a focus on trauma; using Art Therapy and EMDR. Art Therapy and EMDR are highly effective ways of expression for many who have experienced trauma and have mental health concerns. Also focusing on Labor, delivery and PPD, many will benefit from the process of art making and self-expression. I believe that building rapport and trust is one of the most important parts of the therapeutic relationship.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
