Sexual Abuse Therapists in Newburgh, NY
If you're feeling disconnected or struggling with relationships or daily life, know you're not alone. Many of the people I work with have experienced childhood trauma, neglect, emotional abuse, or moments of feeling detached, distant, or “checked out” from themselves or the world. Healing doesn’t have to be faced alone—it’s okay to show up just as you are, with all the complexities that come with it. Together, we’ll explore what feels overwhelming, slowly and expansively, allowing space for healing at your own pace.

UGH! - I FEEL STUCK! and I have no idea how to get out of this!" - Have you ever felt this way? We all have - and some much longer than they have needed to. Life is full of highs and lows- everyone experiences them! No one can escape them, and we each have our own way of dealing with them. Sometimes the "lows" we experience can leave us feeling helpless, breathless and quite honestly- hopeless.

Things can look and seem really good on the outside. you may have done a lot of work but in therapy before, but you still struggle with your relationships and with your self-esteem. That negative core belief (I'm not enough; I'm unlovable, etc.) you have about yourself is still there and won't go away. You find you either overreact or under-react. Many people see therapy as a one-sided conversation, with little opportunity for interaction or getting to experience each other as real people. I can promise you that I am as real as it gets! I want to help you achieve whatever goals, solutions and life changes you are looking for while enjoying the process as much as possible and experiencing yourself in new ways. Simply put, I don’t believe therapy has to always be a painful thing. Calling a therapist can be intimidating, but I hope you will take a moment (and maybe a deep breath) to call or email and see how I can help.

I have a flair for helping people achieve positive change in their lives. The journey to emotional wellness can be painful and challenging, so I make a strong effort to be encouraging and supportive throughout the process. Hurt, pain, and anger do not define who we are; rather, they open emotional pathways, signaling the need and time for change. Depression often reflects the depth of personal disruption, so when appropriate, I offer advice to validate feelings, encourage healing, and dismantle irrational thinking.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
