I have extensive experience working with high-functioning individuals with substance use and co-occurring mood disorders, as well as severe mental health illness.
Have you or a loved one been struggling with addiction? Do you often isolate or avoid others because you don’t want them to know, and are left feeling helpless, and exhausted? Addiction is a challenge that is not easy to overcome, and is nearly impossible to deal with alone. By reading this, you are taking the first step in committing to a healthier, more fulfilling life. If you are impacted by someone else’s addiction, you are taking a step toward understanding the addictive behaviors, and exploring how to be supportive without enabling harmful behaviors.

I have published research in the areas of anxiety disorders, anger/aggression, risk-taking, and substance use.
Every person encounters challenges and endures hardships throughout their lives. Although we share this fundamentally human experience, no one person’s journey is exactly the same. Given the complexity inherent in every story, therapeutic treatment should be tailored to meet each individual’s needs. My approach is open-minded, creative, and compassionate. I believe that skillful therapy requires an empirically grounded yet flexible and practical process. Effective treatment stems from a strong therapeutic relationship with a clear understanding of where we are heading and how we are going to get there.

Struggling to cope with intense worry, sadness, or anger can feel overwhelming and lonely. Reducing alcohol or other substance use can be similarly isolating and intertwined with negative emotions. Recognizing that there is a problem can be the largest hurdle, but finding a way to make those changes does not have to be. You may have already made attempts to change on your own and make things better, but it hasn’t quite worked out. Often, what to do and when to do it is not clear.

I specialize in the treatment of what are often interconnected problems (mood and anxiety disorders, chronic pain, and trauma), as well as the treatment of behaviors that can develop in response, such as substance use (in an effort to self-medicate). I believe we all do the best we can to cope with pain, using whatever skills we have available. And yet sometimes our best efforts to avoid suffering can serve to keep us stuck retreading the same paths. Step by step, let's venture forward in our work together, letting suffering subside as we uncover meaning, learning to live more full and valued lives.

Utilizing social justice and trauma-informed approaches, I help people of all ages in English and Spanish working through complex diagnoses, substance use, different forms of violence, forced migration, family systems, abuse, as well as exploring sexuality, non-monogamy, gender, kink, and BDSM.
Hi, my name’s Nicholas (he/they), and I’m a Latinx, Middle Eastern, Jewish, and queer psychotherapist in NYC. My multicultural upbringing, experiences with immigration, and growing up in a low-income household have not only inspired me to help people who are marginalized because of how they identify, but also those who experience systematic violence. Through diverse lived and clinical experiences, I'm able to help you discover your inner thoughts surrounding identities, relationships, and social issues that affect how you show up in the world.

I have worked with a wide range of individuals navigating anxiety, depression, grief/loss, career stress, substance use, relationship issues, and other issues.
Challenges in life can be overwhelming if not downright defeating without support. As your therapist, I begin with building our relationship while we identify and address the reasons you are seeking treatment. My ultimate goals are to help you determine what is keeping you from living your ideal life and create a safe space where we can explore your life experiences. I strive to instill a spirit of hope and provide encouragement that change can be possible and that you are the ultimate agent of that change. Together, we will help you lay the groundwork to make positive changes that will serve to enrich your life.

I attend to a wide range of difficult situations such as those experiencing an existential crisis; in particular I work with people who are dealing with grief or facing the experience of loss; despair and anxiety; the need for self-transformation; creative practice; decision making; substance use; sexuality; spiritual issues; and relationship conflicts.
As a philosophical therapist I provide an intellectually nourishing environment in which to explore ideas and feelings that will deepen your understanding of your self. I provide a safe, open minded space where we examine thoughts, feelings, dreams, motivations and conflicts, in order to confront difficult questions and situations. This implies that you will critically consider what it is, or could mean to be a self in this world. I often work from an existential standpoint, particularly when it comes to grief therapy, mourning and loss, and but I also draw from a wide range of ideas from the history of philosophy and literature.
