Over the past 25 years, I have found many opportunities to integrate my training as a verbal psychotherapist, art therapist and yoga teacher. To achieve your therapeutic goals we can incorporate a combination of these modalities, or limit ourselves to one or two depending upon your interest. I describe my approach to therapy as an integration of psychodynamic (insight oriented) and cognitive behavioral therapies. Via psychodynamic work, we get to know ourselves and understand why we make the choices we do. With Cognitive Behavioral Therapy we identify action-oriented solutions in an effort to act ourselves into right thinking.

You work in a high-visibility role where expectations are high and mistakes feel costly. Pornography started as a private way to cope with stress when you were young, but over time as stress increased, it’s created complications. Your partner discovered the pornography and feels deeply affected, or its use has begun to interfere with your professional life. Now you're juggling stress across work and home, trying to protect your reputation, while also struggling with shame, guilt, and urges that no longer feel under control.

I have over thirty years of clinical experience and I strongly believe in the resiliency of the human spirit; the ability for a person to heal and grow given the right kind of nurturing and support. I have witnessed this countless times in many different settings in my professional life. My experience has largely been, though not exclusively, working with men as I have worked in the field of HIV/AIDS for a number of years. I focused on men’s' issues in my graduate work and that, in combination with years of practice, have allowed me a particular insight with regard to working with men and their presenting issues in therapy.

Do you find sex and relationships challenging to navigate? If feelings and needs were never discussed in your home growing up, you might not feel safe expressing them now. As a result, trust and empathy may be difficult for you. Are you struggling with significant changes or transitions and feeling stuck? Is it difficult to feel optimistic? To understand where you are right now, it’s necessary to look back at where you came from. Our work helps you discover how, without realizing it, past connections (with family, teachers, friends, etc.) impact relationships in the present.

Of course, sexual sobriety is crucial for therapeutic progress, but I have found that healing the childhood neglect and abuse that--without exception--underlie the development of a sexual addiction is also essential if the individual is to have the truly transformative recovery he or she deserves.
Healing from sexual addiction requires addiction remediation as well as trauma-based healing and treatment. Abuse and neglect in the early years of the developing sex addict must be addressed if an ongoing, robust recovery is to be achieved and maintained. Shame reduction is essential, so group treatment is especially helpful.

I feel privileged to help create a safe space where you can at your pace, discover yourself, express yourself, and learn if there are ways in which you might be sabotaging yourself. Feeling at odds with ourselves is really what jams us up the most, and more often than not, unwittingly. Ourselves, regarding feelings, memories, needs, and wishes. Also, life phases, goals, issues of trust in relationships or lack of relationships, illness, work and creativity sometimes seem daunting.

The most rewarding thing I do is help people create more intimacy & vulnerability with themselves and others. One of my main focuses is helping clients embrace their relationships in healthier ways. I enjoy working with clients who have blocks that are keeping them from desired romantic relationships. Together we can address underlying stresses from trauma or current triggers and work through them, developing new coping skills along the way. I believe individuals understand their strengths and limitations best, and so my task will be in helping to deepen awareness.

Sexual Addiction Therapists
When should someone seek treatment for sex addiction?
People should seek treatment for sex addiction if they cannot control their sexual thoughts or behaviours to the point that it disrupts their ability to function in daily life, for example by threatening their finances, career, or relationships. This may include spending an excessive amount of time obsessing over sex, planning sex, watching pornography, or masturbating, as well as consistently engaging in risky sexual activities, using sex to escape distressing feelings, or attempting yet failing to control sexual behavior.

What are the most common treatment options for sex addiction?
Psychotherapy is the most common treatment for sex addiction; therapy helps patients better understand their compulsive thoughts and behaviors and develop strategies to manage their desires. Therapy may be supplemented by medications, such as antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anti-androgens, and the alcohol and substance use medication Naltrexone, as well as support groups, such as 12-step programs.

How long does therapy take for sex addiction?
Recovering from compulsive behavior takes time and effort. There’s no precise timeline for treatment, but research suggests 12 therapy sessions may be enough to see change. Treatment for sexual compulsions requires honesty in therapy, a commitment to understanding triggers and developing coping skills, and potential lifestyle changes such as cutting out alcohol or drugs.

What if sex addiction is left untreated?
Compulsive sexual behavior can have serious repercussions if left unaddressed. For example, if sexual obsessions consume the vast majority of a person’s time, they may lose their job. If they can’t stop paying for sex, their finances may suffer. If they’re dishonest in their relationships, their partner may leave them. If they consistently feel shame, they may struggle with anxiety, depression, or loneliness. Therapy can help people develop the tools to manage sexual thoughts and behaviors that feel uncontrollable.
