My work is grounded in close listening, focused inquiry, and attention to how experience is organized in the body and in relationships. I am especially effective at helping clients get unstuck—identifying what is actually shaping their choices and responses, often beneath habitual narratives or over-analysis. Drawing on extensive clinical experience, I work efficiently, helping clients gain clarity, experiment with new ways of responding, and build momentum toward change rather than remaining caught in prolonged reflection.

Does it feel like anxiety or other emotions hold you hostage? Or do you, your teen, or your college-aged child struggle to make sense of your emotions or feel like emotions (or running from emotions) drive your decisions? Emotions are beautiful and challenging, and I love helping teens, young adults, and adults navigate the storm and move toward a life worth living. I completed my post-doc training at McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School in the 3East Intensive Program providing adherent DBT therapy to adolescents. I have experience in a range of settings including community mental health, IOP, PHP, and Residential Treatment.

In our work together, we’ll take time to understand the challenges you’re facing—whether it’s anxiety that keeps you on edge, depression that feels heavy and persistent, or the lingering impact of trauma. Rather than rushing to “fix” things, we’ll move at a pace that feels safe, focusing on gently shifting patterns and beliefs that may have once helped you cope but no longer serve the life you’re trying to build. You can expect a supportive space where compassion and honesty go hand in hand, and where you’re encouraged to show up exactly as you are.

Life is complex, and you might experience a gap between what you want and where you are at. If you are feeling stuck, anxious, perhaps experiencing difficulty making important decisions, or feeling that your life is not moving in the direction you want; psychotherapy might be a space for you to evolve in the way you desire by learning about yourself and ways to transition your current circumstances.

I am a NY, NJ, and CT licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist. I was born and raised in Ireland and received my BA in Psychology from University College Dublin. After coming to the US, I received both my MSW and Ph.D. from Columbia University School of Social Work. I am trained in CBT and DBT, both evidence-based approaches to the treatment of a range of mental health concerns. These therapeutic approaches provide flexible frameworks through which to view presenting issues and are practical and skill-based which allow for gains to be carried forward long after therapy has finished.

Seeing your child angry, depressed, anxious, and engaging in self destructive behaviors like cutting or using substances is overwhelming, confusing and frightening.
Using a strength-focused and person-centered approach to therapy, I empower my clients to find their voice and support them as they develop coping skills, process their emotions, and grow into their genuine self. My areas of focus include self-harming behaviors, low self esteem, depression, anxiety, substance use, and LGBTQIA+ identity exploration.

Self-Harming Therapists
How does therapy for self-harm work?
A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?
Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
