I also draw from Schema Therapy and mindfulness as treatment tools.
My practice centers on helping people live everyday more fully. Daily pressures to manage work, relationships, and ourselves often leave us feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. Some people express these feelings through anxiety or persistent self-critical thoughts. Others may feel discouraged, guilty, ashamed or sad. Many use substances, food, risky behavior or other distractions to momentarily feel better. Psychotherapy can help resolve these issues by creating a space to gain better coping strategies, enhance your focus of your place in the world, and develop greater resiliency.

I'm certified in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (NYU), and have advanced training in Schema Therapy (ISST) and Emotion Focused Therapy (CCEFT).
While I join most therapists in providing a safe, free flowing, and non-judgmental space to simply talk - something we certainly all need - I also collaborate with clients to develop more active sessions for lasting change in their lives. This includes goal setting, homework, guided imagery, psychoeducation, mindfulness, and other evidence based practices. I specialize working with anxiety / panic attacks, depression, anger, shame, addiction, men’s issues, adolescents, adhd, identity/values formation, and pessimism. I also help with relationship issues, including communication, infidelity, and anger / forgiveness.

As part of this approach I utilize Schema Therapy when appropriate, which allows for a quick assessment of life patterns and can be helpful in structuring therapy.
I have years of experience helping clients deal with anxiety, depression and anger problems and with couples who are looking to reduce marital conflict. When new clients call me they are looking for help in coping so they can feel better and handle their life challenges more effectively. Some people are looking for understanding of what happened and how they got here, and some are more interested in learning coping skills quickly, and most want some combination of both approaches. I listen to what their individual wants and needs and plan accordingly.

My specialty is working with people in transition, on the cusp between the past and the future. What worked before, works no more...or maybe it never did, really. So now what? I'm here to help you make decisions and take action so you feel in charge of your own life again (or for the first time).

I blend my experience as a founder of schema therapy, an advanced form of cognitive therapy, with skills I have learned from master therapists over the years.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist who has been in private practice in Manhattan for over forty years. I specialize in gay group therapy, individual and couples therapy for a wide range of clients . As one of the founders of modern cognitive therapy, I am committed to helping you identify and change the stories you tell yourself. That will help you become more of the person you want to be. Known as a warm and strong leader who knows how to move quickly to the heart of a problem, I also have a great sense of humor and bring a lot of playfulness to our work together. One of my specialities is helping people deal with loneliness.

Schema therapy differs from many therapeutic practices in that it is an active process that requires a degree of commitment to growth that many practitioners do not ask of clients.
Schema therapy offers a model that allows clients to better understand why they seem to find themselves stuck in a rut of depression, anxiety, loneliness, and shame, often for years. Once that understanding has been achieved, we will work together to heal past traumas and find new ways of being in the world.

I received special training in schema therapy, CBT, exposure therapy, and CBIT.
FREE CONSULT. Do RESULTS matter to you? Everyone I see has OCD, Panic, Agoraphobia, PTSD, or Social Anxiety. These conditions are extremely treatable with the RIGHT kind of DRUG-FREE CBT Exposure therapy. I aim to eliminate symptoms, not just treat or manage them. Clients are liberated to move on with life--get married, prevent divorce or firing, have families, advance or change careers, resume friendships, return children to school--often in the middle of therapy. Therapy doesn't stop at the door. I contact my clients after every session to check on them.

Using a trauma-informed, integrative approach, I draw from expressive arts therapy, CBT, EMDR, DBT, schema therapy, somatic work, and nutrition-based insights—tailored to each person’s unique needs.
My primary therapeutic goal is to support individuals, in their journey towards healthy and sustainable growth, including resolution of any past trauma. My approach is grounded in collaboration. I recognize that life can bring periods of feeling stuck, disconnected, being caught in patterns of avoidance, anxiety, and discontentment. In response, I offer a trauma-informed, intermodal framework that incorporates creative and expressive arts therapies alongside evidence-based practices. Together, we work to build skills that foster intentional growth and healing from past experiences, empowering clients to move toward in their goals.

I often use a combination of psychodynamic, intergenerational trauma, and Schema therapy modalities in my practice.
Are you a caretaker trying your hardest to understand a child or vice versa? Are you struggling with a relationship (familial, romantic, platonic, or professional)? Do your emotions, or the emotions of someone close to you feel out of control? Is it difficult for you to practice positive self-talk and refrain from comparing yourself to other people? We are all raised to believe specific ideas about who we are - beliefs that impact our decisions and behaviors. These concepts are frequently rooted in cultural norms and stereotypes that shape our identities and have an overbearing influence on our experiences.

My approach is grounded in evidence-based techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), psychotherapy, schema therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and narrative therapy, and I tailor interventions to suit the individual needs of each client.
The ideal client is one who is open to understanding themselves better, and just by searching this database, you're already there! I work with clients (mostly teens and young adults) who are looking to make a change to their routines, habits, or perspectives to achieve a better quality of life or simply understand their inner worlds more fully.

These are the treatment types I use: Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Attachment, Interpersonal, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Schema Therapy.
Okay, let me guess — life feels like a lot right now. You’re overwhelmed, drained, and stuck in patterns that just aren’t working anymore. Maybe you’re questioning your relationships, struggling at work, or wondering why you feel so disconnected. That glass of whiskey, wine, or weed isn’t helping like it used to. With nearly 20 years of experience, I use Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help you process difficult emotions, release what’s weighing you down, and reconnect with yourself. Together, we’ll create a path toward feeling more grounded and at peace.

I also utilize schema therapy techniques, encouraging clients to explore patterns in past relationships preventing growth in current relationships.
Sometimes life's challenges can be overwhelming, leading to a feeling of being "stuck". Is this a familiar feeling? If so, I believe I can help. I've worked with many clients through my 25+ years of experience. While I've treated people for varying issues, I've found that most clients commonly seek to feel understood and empowered to make change. My focus in therapy is to identify where a person feels challenged, and why. Once an understanding of where a person is emotionally and what their therapy goals are, we can work together using a variety of therapeutic techniques to move towards achieving those goals.

Schema Therapy

How does schema therapy work?

Schema therapy is based on the idea that maladaptive thought patterns formed in childhood—that other people can never be relied on, for example—can interfere with healthy functioning in adulthood. Accordingly, schema therapy works by directly targeting such unhealthy schemas, identifying their consequences, and replacing them with more adaptive ways of thinking. To this end, schema therapists aim to “reparent” the client by offering what they didn’t get in childhood—validation, for instance, or compassion—to reorient their worldview.

Is schema therapy evidence-based?

Schema therapy is still considered relatively new, and research on its efficacy is still in progress. However, some studies have concluded that it can be effective at treating certain mental health conditions, most notably personality disorders such as borderline personality disorder. Evidence for its efficacy in treating conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD is promising but less conclusive, and experts warn that much of the existing research is of low quality.

Is schema therapy a type of CBT?

Schema therapy is based on many principles of CBT, most notably the process of recognizing and challenging maladaptive thought patterns. But because schema therapy also draws from other approaches, including psychoanalysis and Gestalt therapy, it is not considered a form of CBT. It also typically delves deeper into the client’s childhood than does CBT.

How does schema therapy work?

Schema therapy does not call for a set number of sessions and is instead open-ended, with the treatment timeline depending on the client’s primary concern(s), progress, and preferences. Treatment that lasts between six months and two years is common, though many clients will start to see progress much earlier than that.
