I believe in the capacity of us all to define our life's path by taking risks and stretching in new directions. This can be one of the hardest parts of OCD and anxiety: feeling like your choices are dictated by the lump in your throat, the pit in your stomach or obsessive thoughts. Before I became a therapist, I was a lawyer for almost 20 years. That experience informs my work with clients as we strengthen their inner advocate and, often, develop a truer understanding of who they are and want to be when they are actively choosing how to live. YOU are not that critical, anxious voice in your head; let's clarify and pursue YOUR path.

The therapies that I use help treat OCD, trauma, anxiety, depression, phobias, eating disorders, and more, by learning skills to help foster more flexible and effective response.
When we experience difficult emotions, or difficult things happen to us, it strikingly shapes the lens in which we view the world, our relationships, and our sense of self. We can feel stuck and trapped in our pain, which can cause our range of behaviors to narrow to ones that help us survive the moment, but don’t help us move beyond it, or towards the things that matter to us the most. I’m Gabi Miano, and as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) trained in evidence-based practices, I strive to help people understand their emotional and behavioral patterns and work towards behaviors that can generate meaning and purpose.

I have extensive training and experience using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (CBT) to treat anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and OCD related disorders.
I believe that using evidence-based techniques in a compassionate therapeutic relationship is the key to successful treatment. My work with my clients is grounded in empathy and connection while helping individuals gain insight into their struggles. As your therapist, I will help you learn how to reduce the impact and influence of painful thoughts and feelings while taking action to build a life that is full and meaningful. You will also learn how to implement new techniques and skills and, ultimately, how to be your own therapist.

I work with people from all walks of life and specialize in those recovering from trauma, struggling with problematic relationship patterns, and coping with OCD.
The primary goal of psychotherapy is to allow you to come closer to the person you'd like to be. This means exploring and discovering your values and aligning your life more closely with those values. I have been practicing for ten years, helping people with a wide variety of struggles, find relief and grow to be the people they want to be. Using techniques that help you to understand and change problematic life patterns, I emphasize finding your strengths and allowing those to be the foundation of your growth.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
