I am an Imago trained couples therapist.
In my 20+ years of experience working with adults and couples, I believe that the therapeutic relationship and the safety it provides is key to change. My expertise lies in helping my clients work through their depression, anxiety and relationship issues. As an EMDR trained therapist I help my clients desensitize and reprocess traumatic memories and break free of the distorted negative beliefs they developed in a dysfunctional or addicted family system. The link between childhood trauma exposure and substance abuse is well established. EMDR can help treat alcohol and drug addiction by treating the trauma that underlies it.

I am also a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist and enjoy helping couples navigate through the difficulties they are experiencing in a safe and supportive environment.
I work primarily with young adults and adults who are looking for effective, sustainable solutions to deal with life's daily challenges. I enjoy helping my clients remove obstacles that are keeping them stuck so they can reach their goals and more. I believe that the therapeutic bond is of primary importance especially when it feels difficult or scary or even exciting and new. I have a strong presence and my clients know I am with them through the entire process. I integrate EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), whenever it is appropriate, to help the process move along.

In couples' work, I use Gottman and Imago techniques to help partners foster non-violent communication and mutual understanding.
I intimately understand how healing from trauma can be emotionally fraught, draining, and tedious. My hope is to help you shoulder these burdens so that you don’t have to go through such emotional difficulties alone. I am queer, non-monogamous, Jewish, and radically sex positive; I work hard to affirm folks of these and other marginalized identities. My therapeutic approach actively endeavors to dismantle ways in which homophobia, fatphobia, sex negativity, and neurotypical hegemony may impede the healing process. You are the expert of your own experience and our work together will reflect that.

I’m a psychoanalytically trained psychotherapist and Certified Imago Relationship Therapist.
Beginning therapy is a big deal. Talking about oneself to someone you’ve never met before can be daunting. Will you be judged? Given advice you didn’t ask for? Not given feedback you really need? You’ve probably been grappling with the issues that prompted you to make the appointment for some time, and may feel badly that you couldn’t figure it out yourself. In that first session I’ll be listening to understand what’s the matter but also how you’re experiencing the problem. We may need to work together to shift self-criticism and judgment to curiosity and compassion so that you can mobilize your inner strengths.

My approach is grounded in human capacity for growth and uses elements of Psychodynamic Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems, and Imago Relationship Therapy.
Many of us lead busy lives with little space to breathe, think, and make choices with clarity. We hold ourselves to unsustainable standards in our careers, relationships and as parents. We may run from day to day with an anxious stream of thoughts, or float numbly with disconnection and over-scheduling as a way to avoid pain. Sometimes our expectations, goals and circumstances come at the expense of clarity and fulfillment. I work with individuals & couples to reconnect while understanding how the past impacts present living. We collaborate to build a foundation of skills that promote healing as individuals and within relationships.

Imago Therapists

How does Imago therapy work?

Imago relationship therapy is a form of couples counseling meant to help partners address conflict, communication problems, and related issues. Imago sessions typically involve couples sitting facing each other and participating in guided conversations. Therapy will also involve exercises such as re-imagining one’s partner as a wounded child; re-romanticizing a relationship through appreciation, surprises, and even gift-giving and restructuring frustrations by transforming complaints into requests. The ultimate goal is to re-envision the relationship as a source of safety and happiness.

What is the Imago method?

A core technique of Imago therapy is the Imago dialogue, in which partners learn to avoid hurtful statements and establish ways to interact based on each having equal space and power. In the dialogue, partners take turns as the “sender,” who shares their thoughts, and the “receiver.” The receiver is asked to “mirror,” or paraphrase, what their partner has said, without response or rebuttal, and then validate their statements, acknowledging understanding even if they do not personally agree with it. Finally, the receiver displays empathy by stating what they imagine the other is feeling, and showing appreciation for it.

How long does Imago therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for Imago therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core techniques of Imago coaching, some couples quickly make progress, but most should expect sessions to extend for months, encompassing at least 12 to 20 sessions, along with extensive “homework” from their therapist.

Does Imago therapy work?

There is limited empirical evidence to support the benefits of Imago therapy, but some smaller studies suggest that it does help couples, at least in the short-term. A 2017 study found that marital satisfaction increased significantly after couples completed 12 sessions of Imago therapy, and remained higher for some time after that, but did not always result in “complete recovery.” Other studies found greater empathy and fewer feelings of relationship burnout in couples after therapy. Some research suggests that Imago therapy can aid individuals as well as couples; people with ADHD in particular may benefit from the development of communication, self-control, and listening skills that form the basis of the technique.
