Looking for a therapist that's creative, easy to connect with, and willing to find a way of relating and interacting that meets your needs in a safe, personal, and respectful way? Psychotherapy's not the same for everyone, and everybody's needs are different in terms of what they hope to achieve. Whether it's frustrations with life or a job, relationship issues, pain related to loss or trauma, or merely stress & overwhelm with decision-making, it helps to have someone to talk it out with - in a concise number of sessions, or over an extended period of time.

With over 26 years of experience, I have formal training in CBT, DBT, REBT, IMAGO, and many other modalities.
John P. Carnesecchi, LCSW, CEAP is a seasoned clinician that treats people of all ages. A client is usually struggling but feels connected enough with me as their therapist to speak openly and freely about their experience. They can accept feedback with an understanding that we are both on the same team. When we touch on something out of their comfort zone, I hope they recognize they are safe and can stay engaged in the process. Together, we push past the barriers preventing them from feeling better, and they gain a better understanding of themselves to meet their potential.

You might be reading this because you find yourself at a crossroads and you’re looking to try something new. Maybe the old way of doing things feels unsatisfying but you’re unsure of how to forge a new path for yourself. You might feel empty or disconnected inside or like you don’t truly know who you are or what you want. Maybe you feel like there were parts of your identity that were unwelcome or unwanted and you’re struggling to integrate them into who you are today. Therapy can help us slow down and notice the way our history informs our actions so that we can make choices that feel more authentic to us.

I have always believed that everyone possesses their own unique strength, and that trust and support have the power to bring about meaningful change. At certain moments in life, we may feel stuck, lost, or even begin to doubt ourselves. But please remember: even in the darkest times, you hold the strength to rise again. As Rilke reminds us, no feeling is eternal. Emotions shift, pain softens, and new possibilities quietly begin to emerge. As a therapist, I hope to be a companion on a part of your journey–walking alongside you with warmth and steadiness. I will offer personalized support and approaches tailored to your needs,

My ideal client is someone who’s always kept it together—the go-to person, the problem solver, the strong one. But beneath the surface, they’re carrying the weight of childhood wounds, relationship stress, or cultural expectations that have left them feeling disconnected, anxious, or emotionally drained. They’re not looking for quick fixes—they’re ready for deep healing. They want to feel more emotionally present, communicate better in their relationships, and finally put themselves first without guilt. They’re ready to break cycles, not just survive them.

I work deeply and kindly with all life's issues. I help those dealing with relationship concerns, career challenges and life transitions. I also work with those suffering from shame, self-criticism and negative thought patterns which may arise from early abuse or neglect. While it is imperative to address past trauma and correct cognitive misperceptions, treating these issues also requires the development of self-compassion. With warmth and empathy, I will help you nurture self-acceptance, cultivate compassion and understanding, allowing you to become a more authentic and contented self.

Imago Therapists

How does Imago therapy work?

Imago relationship therapy is a form of couples counseling meant to help partners address conflict, communication problems, and related issues. Imago sessions typically involve couples sitting facing each other and participating in guided conversations. Therapy will also involve exercises such as re-imagining one’s partner as a wounded child; re-romanticizing a relationship through appreciation, surprises, and even gift-giving and restructuring frustrations by transforming complaints into requests. The ultimate goal is to re-envision the relationship as a source of safety and happiness.

What is the Imago method?

A core technique of Imago therapy is the Imago dialogue, in which partners learn to avoid hurtful statements and establish ways to interact based on each having equal space and power. In the dialogue, partners take turns as the “sender,” who shares their thoughts, and the “receiver.” The receiver is asked to “mirror,” or paraphrase, what their partner has said, without response or rebuttal, and then validate their statements, acknowledging understanding even if they do not personally agree with it. Finally, the receiver displays empathy by stating what they imagine the other is feeling, and showing appreciation for it.

How long does Imago therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for Imago therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core techniques of Imago coaching, some couples quickly make progress, but most should expect sessions to extend for months, encompassing at least 12 to 20 sessions, along with extensive “homework” from their therapist.

Does Imago therapy work?

There is limited empirical evidence to support the benefits of Imago therapy, but some smaller studies suggest that it does help couples, at least in the short-term. A 2017 study found that marital satisfaction increased significantly after couples completed 12 sessions of Imago therapy, and remained higher for some time after that, but did not always result in “complete recovery.” Other studies found greater empathy and fewer feelings of relationship burnout in couples after therapy. Some research suggests that Imago therapy can aid individuals as well as couples; people with ADHD in particular may benefit from the development of communication, self-control, and listening skills that form the basis of the technique.
