I have been treating patients in psychotherapy for over 35 years. Therapy offers people help towards change, change towards the life they want. Yet,for various reasons, this life has not been attainable. My approach is to offer patients a safe, supportive, understanding environment in which they can explore their hopes and fears and the obstacles that get in their way of having a fuller, richer life.

I provide an opportunity for people to freely express their feelings and thoughts to achieve the changes they desire. I work interactively with clients so they may develop their strengths and achieve their goals. Assisting individuals in becoming at ease with their feelings, however difficult they may be, is an important aspect of the work I do. Feelings can become useful tools for living rather than disturbing impediments. The ubiquitous problems of uncomfortable feelings, harmful behaviors, and the challenges of relationships, careers and parenting are common areas of focus.

Life is full of challenges and you deserve a nonjudgmental space to examine your patterns, feelings, and relationships with curiosity and compassion. As a former student of religion, I believe that pain is a part of life, and that we can deal with pain by creating narrative and understanding.Let’s examine the stories you have about yourself, rewrite that story, and explore what wellness looks like for you.

I welcome people struggling with issues like anxiety, codependency, addiction, and eating disorders to work with me. I am a good fit for people who are motivated and ready to make difficult changes in their lives—changes they’ve struggled to manage on their own and need more support with. I offer a warm and honest space to meet people where they are and walk with them through the process. My approach is relational and I gently challenge limiting beliefs, that typically hold people back from where they want to be. I am always open to feedback and guidance along the process.

My approach is primarily insight-oriented -- discovering patterns that shape your life and affect your sense of yourself. It's also practical -- for example, working on developing boundaries in relationships. Much of my experience is with LGBTQ individuals and healthcare workers.

Life can feel overwhelming at times—moments when it’s hard to move forward, when self-compassion feels out of reach, or when relationships feel strained. You may feel anxious, stuck, or disconnected from yourself and others. In therapy, you don’t have to face these struggles alone. I provide a safe, supportive space where you can share openly, gain clarity, and begin to relate to yourself and others with greater acceptance and empathy.

As Black men a lot of us have been socialized in ways that makes maintaining deep relationships a challenge. Whether the cause is unresolved trauma, communication skills with room for improvement, socialization of our masculinity or anything else, allowing the issue to go unresolved creates tension where there could be harmony. A lot of us developed defenses for remaining safe in a world we feel isn’t safe for us. We also develop dynamics in our relationships where we may continue deploying defenses in safe spaces, preventing ourselves from receiving love and loving to our fullest capacity.

I am a training analyst and supervisor at NPAP and Blanton-Peale Institute, and a professor at CUNY. I use a psychodynamic approach allied with an interpersonal or relational orientation. I interact with clients as they come to grips with the hurtful circumstances of the past- or recent events- that have undermined self-esteem or their sense of self and resulted in poor personal choices and decision making in the present. I understand the persistence of unproductive or destructive modes of behavior, or the difficulty of seeing oneself in a new, hopeful light and acting in accord with such insight.

You’re used to being the strong one, the one people rely on, the one who keeps it all together. On the outside, it may look like you're handling things well, but internally you might feel anxious, overwhelmed, or emotionally drained from carrying so much on your own. I am currently practicing as a Mental Health Counseling resident under the supervision of Dr. Eleni Toumarides, LCSW. I am currently offering free (pro bono) therapy sessions as part of my clinical training under supervision. In person and virtual sessions are available.

People most often contact me when a critical life event has occurred. They may be feeling anxious or depressed, or have become newly aware of a need to make changes in the way they handle their relationships, emotions, and self-esteem. For some, this is the beginning of a long journey of self-exploration. Others prefer to seek new, more effective tools to address the immediate situation. I think that a good clinician should be able to tailor the treatment to fit the needs and preferences of the client. Too often it is the other way around.
