I strongly believe in the collaborative nature of therapy - the creative engagement between the client and therapist, working toward a common goal: to help bring a greater sense of well being to you, the client - to your life, your psyche, your body, your relationships, your career, your home. I have a background in film, which makes working with people from the arts a natural fit (though I love to work with clients from all walks of life). Relationship concerns, career concerns, depression, anxiety, existential questioning, trauma, illness, bereavement and addictions are some of the areas in which I have experience.

Transparency, encouragement and support make up the foundation of my approach. By replacing judgment with curiosity, I work to create a space where people can explore topics that may otherwise produce shame or guilt. This process fosters courage, self-awareness, self-acceptance, strength, new ways of thinking, and ultimately, relief and improvement. Guided by attachment theory, interpersonal psychology, and existential psychology, I use a psychodynamic approach to help people develop the clarity, confidence, and energy they need to take positive action and live their fullest lives.

My work is strongly informed by training in Gestalt Therapy, and by Humanistic and Existential approaches, my experience as a yoga teacher/practitioner, and my early background in the performing arts.
Being a human on this planet may bring difficulties that can impact how we live, how we love, how we work, and how we play. Life's challenges, losses, and traumas may have left you feeling lost, alone, disconnected, stuck, and unable to live to your fullest capacity, in spite of your best efforts. Challenges can exist in many areas: relationships, work, sense of identity, how you live in the world, even how you live in your own body. Sometimes you need a professional and non-judgmental ally to assist with restoring and preserving emotional and relational well-being, so that you can live more fully and authentically in the world.

Existential concerns can cause us to question our self-worth, our meaning, our identity and our ability to connect with others.
Welcome. My name is Allie. I specialize in couples/marriage counseling, anxiety disorders, men's issues and adolescent issues. With couples therapy, we work together to identify gaps in communication and fix persistent relational patterns that leave both parties feeling: "this argument is going nowhere." For individuals, we will explore unconscious patterns/behaviors in relationships with others and with yourself, and by doing so we will lessen the level of distress/anxiety you are finding yourself or your relationship in. I help all patients gain a life-long ability to self-reflect internally and build more connected lives.

I want to offer a space where every part of you feels warmly invited to participate in the process of healing and self-understanding. Whether you are seeking help for anxiety, depression, existential dread, addiction, relationship struggles, low self-esteem, professional hurdles, or creative blocks, I believe a key ingredient to long-term change is the chance to be experienced fully without the familiar fear of judgment. This means I welcome, with compassion and gentle curiosity, the aspects of you that feel buried, objectionable, or even unacceptable, perhaps due to social stigma or fear of being rejected.

I firmly believe that each individual is capable of improving their life, when they are ready to do so, and with the help of a well-matched therapist. I will work with you to gain a better understanding of who you truly are and what you want, while exploring ways to help you find purpose, peace and acceptance. I use existential and psychodynamic therapeutic approaches, and attachment theory and shadow work frame my perspective. I believe our true self emerges when we shed the social persona and integrate our identity with the unconscious parts of ourselves, thus rediscovering who we truly are.

Existential Therapists

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
