My treatment approaches include: Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ( ACT ).
Psychological health is much more than the absence of problems and mental illness. Even when things seem to be going well we may still feel that there is something missing and that our lives lack the happiness, purpose, and vitality that we desire. My approach begins with the identification of your values. This becomes the foundation of our work together. We then explore thoughts and feelings that get in the way of living a more meaningful and satisfying life and replace them with strategies that are more values consistent and effective in the pursuit of a more satisfying life.

Throughout our lives, we carry within us the voices, the gaze, acceptance or disapproval, the expectations, and the praise or criticism of those who have raised us and occupied our lives. Therapy can help us discover and clarify these powerful experiences and grow in our understanding of how they motivate us, giving us freedom to make more authentic decisions in our daily lives. I view therapy as an opportunity to heal, receive support, solve problems, improve relationships, and escape problems and patterns that seem to reappear over time.

In our work together, we will use tools from ACT and mindfulness-based CBT therapies to cultivate self-understanding, acceptance , and self-compassion.
What do you want out of life? What is it that fuels you and provides you with joy? When struggling with depression or self-criticism, a life of meaning can seem out of reach. We are disconnected from that which we truly want and desire. It becomes hard to find motivation and even harder to remain motivated. Fear, doubt, and dread can overwhelm our sense of self. Even if we have some idea of what we want, we feel stymied from moving forward and creating a fuller and richer life for ourselves. If you are feeling stuck, I want to help you connect and reclaim your passion for life.

We all experience difficult times in our lives. Many of us struggle to form and maintain healthy relationships with our partners/friends/family, or struggle to manage stress/burnout, or know how to navigate life stage transitions (parenthood, breakups/divorce, retirement, illness, etc). Whether you want to strengthen your self-worth/confidence, improve communication or intimacy in relationships, slow down reactivity, or stop repeating self destructive cycles, therapy is a space to gain insight and skills to help break patterns that hinder your life satisfaction. From meditation, mindfulness, sleep hygiene, CBT, psychodynamic psychotherapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and spiritual practices I am open to using whatever strategies best suit your needs.
Where are you in your healing journey? Healing can take unexpected twists and turns, it unfolds naturally, it wrinkles, and relaxes again over time. Have you reached a point where you are ready to release old patterns, let go of old stories, and truly embrace a bold new vision for your future? Creating a safe, nurturing therapeutic space allows for deep self-exploration and developing a loving awareness. If you are reading this I am sure that you have already started to reflect on the person you are today, but sometimes an objective ally can facilitate even more growth.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
