I have found, in my private practice, that people usually seek therapy when they are going through an extremely stressful time in their lives, feel increasingly depressed or anxious or feel dissatisfied with different aspects of their lives(relationships, career, life transitions). My goal as a therapist is to provide a safe, confidential and non-judgmental atmosphere in which clients can express their feelings and gain insight into what led to their current state of mind or difficult situation.

As a therapist, what I find most satisfying is to help people who have experienced trauma early in life. If you are someone who feels you were denied the love and caretaking you needed as a child because of abuse or neglect, we would be a good fit for therapy. I can help you unburden persistent feelings of lack of worth, guilt or shame that may be keeping you from having a rich, fulfilling life. I am an active participant in sessions, asking questions and guiding you to explore your experience of things that happened to you and around you. I reflect and give feedback on what you tell me.

Psychoanalytic therapy—and psychoanalytically informed psychotherapy—offer a distinctive kind of conversation: an open, protected space where anything can be said, and everything is listened to with care. Thoughts and feelings that may have long gone unspoken—even to yourself—can begin to take shape. I work with people navigating anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, creative blocks, and the lingering effects of trauma. Through deep listening and the slow, collaborative work of discovery, familiar patterns begin to shift. Inhibitions soften, new experiences become possible, and a fuller sense of aliveness can emerge.

Hi there! I have extensive experience working with children, adolescents and the adults in their lives. My approach is collaborative, active and supportive. As a therapist, I believe it’s critically important to first and foremost connect with those we’re working with. I create a warm and inviting space where we can connect—to develop both skills and insight. When working with children and younger ones, I integrate play therapy, craft, music, games and other creative outlets. With older clients, I integrate behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

Are you feeling stuck or searching for more meaning? You might feel like you're just going through the motions—stuck in the same patterns, relationships, or career path. You may be searching for more, but aren't sure where to start. You have a deep sense that there's more to life, that you have more to offer, and that you want to feel more fully alive. You want to feel more vibrant, connected, and clear about your purpose.

I am currently taking new patients who are experiencing problems with work, school and/or relationships that are due to obsessive and problematic usage of Internet/video games/smartphones and other electronic screens. Depression and anxiety are often associated with excessive use of these interactive technologies. Over the past 15 years, I have seen a significant rise in my practice in people who have experienced major difficulties that have been rooted in spending too much time online, or excessively involved in one or more forms of interactive technology. PLEASE VISIT MY WEBSITE (www.michaelfraserphd.com) FOR MORE INFORMATION.

It’s time to start living with joy and intention. Although this may seem like an unattainable goal for you right now, with a supportive trusting hand you can live the way you want to live. Therapy should be a compassionate space for you to safely express the wholeness of who you are and address what’s holding you back from fully engaging in your life. Whether it's past trauma, relationship patterns that no longer serve you or fear of being your authentic self, we will identify your strengths and use them to create a life that excites you.

As a clinical psychologist, I have devoted my career to supporting the social-emotional development of children and adolescents. While the specific focus of therapy is individualized according to each child’s needs, much of the work I do centers around helping individuals develop self-awareness, healthy relationships, problem solving skills, and the ability to identify, regulate, and express emotions adaptively. I also regularly collaborate with parents to identify and address patterns of behavior and communicate with their children more effectively.

The courage to face one’s anxiety, sadness or pain is a huge step towards healing. I consider it a privilege and an honor to have people share their life struggles with me. Psychodynamic therapy helps people understand themselves better and, ultimately, the answers that they seek about their lives and what will make them more fulfilled will be revealed.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
