Trauma is what happens when we experience a situation so intensely, that we are never the same afterward.
This right here, this first step is scary. Overwhelming. Intimidating. Vulnerable. This is the scariest part of the process, recognizing that you need additional support. Sometimes it may seem easier to stay in denial, to convince yourself that things are ok, to justify your circumstances, and the reoccurring patterns in your life. Change is scary, and unpredictable, but yet you are here, wading into vulnerability and on the cusp of making a decision that will improve your life undoubtedly.

In the aftermath of 9/11, I worked with various corporations helping people deal with the trauma from that event.
Life's journey can be full of unexpected turns. Relationships can go awry. Parenting, aging, illness and loss, demands for work and career can be stressful. Do you find yourself repeating and reliving destructive patterns, feeling overwhelmed, not getting sufficient joy in your life? It is hard to find a way out alone. Talking with a counselor about issues that trouble us is inherently helpful, especially when combined with methods that create calm and develop awareness of your own sensory and emotional life. We can work together.

Perhaps it’s Covid stress, old or recent trauma , a loss, a relationship or a learning problem, or simply problems becoming your best self - I integrate both psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral approaches, as well as continual study of new developments in the field to help. My style is warm, interactive and tailored to your needs. I see treatment as both an art, a science, and a unique conversation between two people whose focus is on your needs and your desires.

I am deeply interested in how we are quick to turn to ineffective coping skills to self-medicate, often because it’s the best way we know how. I have both a personal and professional understanding of how addiction may be impacting you, and I am here to support you through this moment in your mental health journey. My typical client may be experiencing any of the following issues: substance use, gambling, low self-worth, mood disorders, and trauma . Together we will identify your goals and create a plan together to help you reach them.

The effects of ongoing "atmospheric" family trauma and/or discrete trauma can be diffused by combining interpersonal psychotherapy with EMDR, which works directly with the brain to discover the painful and life-limiting legacies of disruptive, abusive or otherwise extraordinary experiences.
During Covid-19 isolation, we are all experiencing exaggerations of our interpersonal difficulties. Phone or video session are available, to explore your personal responses to these other-worldly times. Interpersonal psychotherapy is a collaborative endeavor of discovering how you feel about yourself, your relationships, past, present and future. Curiosity, empathy and specialized skills can help you to figure out how to minimize/resolve the personal roadblocks that interfere with living the meaningful life you choose. During these stressful times, even a few consults might address and assuage personal adaptations.

We live in a complex world, and the journey to finding oneself while experiencing adversity can be very difficult. Many people come to therapy with the hope that they will find a way to learn how to navigate these challenges. As a clinician, I believe that humans all possess an inherent resilience that can guide us through adverse experiences. I specialize in trauma -informed practice, and I utilize an evidence-based, person-centered, and socially conscious approach to psychotherapy that helps my clients learn ways to activate this existing resiliency.

Often a client is frozen in trauma , either internally or externally induced and their system deregulates becoming "off line".
I am a New York State Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) trained in Gestalt and body psychotherapy. Believing that the body holds the wisdom to heal itself, my practice combines talk therapy with various forms of energy work to facilitate awareness around malfunctioning energy patterns both in the body and in the mind. I am certified in Gestalt Therapy, Integral Somatic Psychotherapy (a master training in body psychotherapy), Biodynamic Cranial Sacral Therapy and yoga. My work integrates body, mind, and Spirit reconnecting disenfranchised parts with the whole so individuals can live fuller more authentic lives.

Whether you or your child are working through conflictual relationships, painful past experiences or trauma , work/school stress, problematic behaviors, or feeling stuck in patterns, our societal context can amplify these difficulties. The past few years have brought multiple global and local crises we have had to navigate through collectively. Through understanding how our past and present circumstances affect us, we cultivate empathy for ourselves and those around us. Therapy illuminates the patterns we find ourselves in, and also provides ways of coping with the distress resulting from these patterns.

Are you struggling with ongoing anxiety and depression you cannot seem to shake? Freedom from acute emotional pain so you can move forward in your life is what I can offer you. I am a seasoned therapist who has discovered that cognitive behavioral therapy is the most effective in evoking deep and lasting change. I have 20 years of experience working with a trauma technique called EMDR that can help to abate emotions attached to negative thoughts. Between CBT and EMDR substantial internal shifts happen. When you change your inside landscape the outside world starts responding to you in new ways that can feel like a newfound freedom.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
