I am affiliated with the following: Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services (Certified as an advanced group therapist); ICP Trauma Studies Center (Faculty and Supervisor);
Domestic
Violence
Project (Director of Connect and Change); Women's Therapy Centre Institute (Supervisor of Post Grad Eating and Body Image Training Program).
I am a psychotherapist in private practice for over twenty years. I treat families, adolescents and adults, especially those seeking help with depression, eating problems, trauma, anxiety, relationship problems, low self-esteem, LGBTQ issues, career decisions, cult involvement and feelings of isolation. I supervise other psychotherapists in a collaborative and supportive environment, with an emphasis on independent and creative thinking. I use varied approaches in my practice, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to treat trauma victims and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples.

While I seldom shut my door to any patient (if I have available time), I have a particular interest and experience with patients with histories of trauma and
abuse
; those dealing with relational issues, anxiety, or depression; those facing aging and illness; and those from marginalized groups, including immigrant and LGBTQ communities.
My focus in working with patients is for them to feel deeply understood by me and to feel safe in exploring their issues, whatever they might be. This understanding is best accomplished, in my mind, through the use of empathy. What is it like for you to be you? For me, the relationship between patient and therapist must point in the direction of healing oneself and through oneself, others. I fundamentally believe, like others before me, that the patient is the one who guides the process. Similarly, it is the patient who is my best teacher.

Therapy is about healing and self growth. It is about making decisions and achieving life goals. It is about bettering relationships and building meaningful ties. It's about working through, and living without the pain of loss, depression and anxiety. In an atmosphere of safety, trust and non-judgement, I will help you navigate those difficulties which foster anxiety, depression and confusion, recognizing the often, central role of trauma in such challenges. I will assist in the process of gaining insight, while making decisions which breed personal and professional success. I will help in cultivating and improving relationships.

My office provides a warm environment committed to curiosity and patience for women suffering eating problems and body image insecurity often converging with sexual and relational
abuse
.
I see people with depression, anxiety, compulsive behaviors as well as traumatic histories and losses. Together, we will work to gain a deep understanding of your early and lifelong relationships, in which your struggles were formed. Additionally, I ask about how social, economic, gendered and racial issues frame your pain. I integrate a basic psycho-dynamic understanding integrated with trauma techniques, body work, hypnosis and cognitive behavioral work in individual and group therapy. Group therapy adds another layer of healing possibility through the camaraderie, clarity and empathy groups provide.

Domestic Abuse Therapists
What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?
Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.
When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?
Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.
What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?
Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.
How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?
It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
