Our shared cycle of human life confronts us with issues longing to be addressed in the here and now, even as rooted in the past or in a sense of unrealized potentials. We do best in engaging such concerns, including the end of life itself, when our explorations occur in an open and activating dialogical process. Additional to the interpersonal process of therapy, our dreams and our engagement with what transcends us, often provide us with the guidance needed to move forward in our living process in a renewed and dynamic manner. Collaboratively and with mutuality, this is the service I am privileged to offer.

Whether you or your child are working through conflictual relationships, painful past experiences or trauma, work/school stress, problematic behaviors, or feeling stuck in patterns, our societal context can amplify these difficulties. The past few years have brought multiple global and local crises we have had to navigate through collectively. Through understanding how our past and present circumstances affect us, we cultivate empathy for ourselves and those around us. Therapy illuminates the patterns we find ourselves in, and also provides ways of coping with the distress resulting from these patterns.

Life's journey can be full of unexpected turns. Relationships can go awry. Parenting, aging, illness and loss, demands for work and career can be stressful. Do you find yourself repeating and reliving destructive patterns, feeling overwhelmed, not getting sufficient joy in your life? It is hard to find a way out alone. Talking with a counselor about issues that trouble us is inherently helpful, especially when combined with methods that create calm and develop awareness of your own sensory and emotional life. My approach to treatment is a supportive, validating and compassionate one, incorporating various styles of practice including insight oriented, relational, Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT) and/or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Each individual has his or her own needs and preferences. This could include either a goal specific, time limited treatment or an insight oriented approach in which they are looking for a space to make meaning of various experiences and understand their impact on the self. A comfortable, trusting, and collaborative therapeutic relationship is an essential foundation necessary to make the changes one of looking for.

Feeling stuck? Find yourself having the same problems at work or in your personal relationships? Perhaps you can even identify specific ways you're sabotaging yourself... You are not alone. As part of development, we learn adaptive as well as maladaptive ways of coping; which can be frustrating and feel hopeless, but your life doesn't have to stay this way. With focused effort and collaboration, we can work to understand how your life got to this point and what you can do to make things better. Psychotherapy is about increasing awareness which leads to freedom.

I see people with depression, anxiety, compulsive behaviors as well as traumatic histories and losses. Together, we will work to gain a deep understanding of your early and lifelong relationships, in which your struggles were formed. Additionally, I ask about how social, economic, gendered and racial issues frame your pain. I integrate a basic psycho-dynamic understanding integrated with trauma techniques, body work, hypnosis and cognitive behavioral work in individual and group therapy. Group therapy adds another layer of healing possibility through the camaraderie, clarity and empathy groups provide.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists
How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.
Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.
How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
