It's hard to stay on top of demands and responsibilities and give each part of your life the consideration it deserves. Maintaining close relationships, parenting, divorce, illness and loss can be stressful and lead to feelings of helplessness and
anxiety
. We can work together to discover your own story and to develop coping skills for challenges in your family and work relationships.

I am a licensed therapist passionate about working with individuals dealing with addiction (or a family member’s addiction),
anxiety
, depression, and codependency. Do you struggle to feel content or whole without using something external (substances, relationships, food)? Do you have difficulties setting boundaries with others or practicing self-compassion? It can feel overwhelming to be vulnerable with another person in therapy and to let yourself truly be seen, but there can be freedom and connection from doing so. I create a non-judgmental space for you to strengthen your inner resources through awareness and self-acceptance.

I see adults experiencing
anxiety
, depression and relationship difficulties. I listen deeply. I help adults become more curious about their thoughts and feelings and question long-held assumptions that no longer apply. I help them tap into their bodies' wisdom. We work on removing roadblocks to free up energy in the essential areas of love, work and play.
I help children experiencing difficulty at home, in school, and with peers. Through play and talk, I help them resume the important tasks of childhood. I have a specialty niche in infants and young children. Attachment issues, trauma, divorce and loss are additional areas of expertise.

Welcome. For over 20 years, I've worked with individuals with depression,
anxiety
, life transitions, medical illness, disability and loss. I work from a mindfulness-based perspective, bringing a kind, compassionate, curious attitude to places of suffering and 'stuckness' in life, to move towards living more consistently in ways that matter to each individual. As the poet Rumi states, "This being human is a guest house," the task being how to invite all the guests, the difficulties, joys and all in between. I integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy. MBCT groups periodically available.

My trainings and life experiences have shaped a unique therapeutic approach. I understand the challenges and
anxiety
we feel as a function of our demanding lives. Psychotherapy is an invaluable journey to deepening the identification of personal strengths, greater self-awareness; leading to enhanced self-reliance. It is important to examine recurring issues, exploring traumas on the conscious and subconscious levels. I focus on individuals and have advanced training working with couples. The goal is to achieve a greater sense of balance, joy and personal awareness.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
