I am deeply interested in how we are quick to turn to ineffective coping skills to self-medicate, often because it’s the best way we know how. I have both a personal and professional understanding of how addiction may be impacting you, and I am here to support you through this moment in your mental health journey. My typical client may be experiencing any of the following issues: substance use, gambling, low self-worth, mood disorders, and trauma. Together we will identify your goals and create a plan together to help you reach them.

Sometimes it can be helpful to talk through issues with someone giving you their undivided attention. It can also be helpful to explore other forms of creative expression when talking isn't enough. I offer these avenues for growth to my clients. Clients I work with often discuss relationship issues, stress related to school or work, feelings of depression and anxiety, and substance abuse and addiction issues.

I am a licensed therapist passionate about working with individuals dealing with addiction (or a family member’s addiction ), anxiety, depression, and codependency. Do you struggle to feel content or whole without using something external (substances, relationships, food)? Do you have difficulties setting boundaries with others or practicing self-compassion? It can feel overwhelming to be vulnerable with another person in therapy and to let yourself truly be seen, but there can be freedom and connection from doing so. I create a non-judgmental space for you to strengthen your inner resources through awareness and self-acceptance.

Additionally, I have expertise in the area of addiction , including sex addiction and have been able to effect change quickly with these kinds of issues.
It's perfectly normal and expected to feel some ambivalence about beginning psychotherapy. There is a natural fear that talking about one's concerns will make them worse and that even things that are going well could worsen in the process. My experience and training over 30 years has shown me however, that the therapeutic process enriches and strengthens what is already going well. The areas that one wants to improve become much better understood through the process, thereby clearing the way for real change to occur, which will only lead to a significantly more fulfilled life.

Everyone can benefit from having someone to talk to in a safe and comfortable environment. Difficulties with life are universal, whether one struggles with work, career direction, addiction , relationships, communication, sexuality, discovering and pursuing one's interests and passions, creating and following through with goals, weight and body issues, self esteem, anxiety or depression. Our friends and family may have good intentions (though not always); usually, they are biased or may want to shift the conversation to talk about themselves. Therapy is a special opportunity to focus on oneself and have the support, attention and incisiveness of a trained individual.

Our lives unfold their beauty, Like the petals of a flower, In challenges from circumstances, We find our finest hour. (C. Alexander Simkins). Generally it is in such circumstances that we find our way to a psychotherapist or a need for medication, not when life is smooth and comfortable. Many years of professional practice blended with my own life experiences have given me empathy and understanding that assist me in my relationships with my clients and in identifying with them what is needed to enhance healing and recovery. I am a nurse practitioner in psychiatry and mental health with a focus on depression, anxiety, life transitions, end of life issues, substance use and medication management. I see both individuals and couples. There are many research studies showing the use of hypnotherapy and mindfulness in easing the symptoms of stress and anxiety and I incorporate both into my practice. www.rickhanson.net. A wonderful resource to increase your knowledge and insights on how to use mindfulness to reduce stress.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason, “interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
