marriage
, childbirth), body image concerns, chronic illness, trauma, and grief.
If you’ve come here, you’re likely searching for a space for your thoughts and feelings beyond what your friends, family, or partner can provide. You are looking for not only a listener and confidant, but also someone who can reflect back and help you clarify what is on your mind. In a warm, validating, and confidential space, you will gain insight into your patterns- both those that serve you well and those you wish you could change- and test out different ways of understanding and relating that can help you achieve your ultimate goals. Our practice includes therapists specializing in CBT, psychodynamic, and contemplative methods.

Couples, whether married or dating, have issues and problems that arise when communication breaks down. This break down in communication leads to misunderstandings which result in anger, hurt, anxiety, depression, guilt, and feelings of hopelessness. We evaluate each person independently with a high level of professional expertise. For couples, there are times when separate therapy for one of the partners is necessary while
marriage counseling
continues concurrently. Individual psychotherapy or psychoanalysis is recommended when one of the partners is depressed or anxious and is struggling with their own personal problems.

I also specialize in sex and
marital
therapy, having spent over 20 years at one of the leading Human Sexuality Programs in the country.
I really enjoy working with people who want to be helped with painful feelings and experiences that have interfered with their sense of well being. All of us are limited by upsettingly negative emotions that make it harder to accomplish things that would make our lives richer, more comfortable and secure. I base my work on the principles of Mindfulnes Based Cognitive Behavior Therapy. This approach has been shown to be very successful helping anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, phobias and many other individual and relationship issues. Like most experienced therapists, I also integrate ideas from other approaches whenever appropriate.

Marriage Counseling Therapists
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
