In my many years of experience I have helped people with
anxiety
, depression, stress, and obsessional thinking.
For over 25 years I have helped individuals and couples resolve their problems resulting in leading more satisfying lives. As a certified psychotherapist/psychoanalyst , with a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology my treatment approach is psychodynamic. My ideal patient is one who desires a change in their own lives as well as how they relate to others. Often as a result of therapy I have seen individuals internalize their treatment by remembering what was said. Many leave with a sense of mastery and accomplishment in coping with adversity. As a member of psychotherapy and psychoanalytical institutes I train others in the field.

I work with people who struggle with
anxiety
, depression, and relationship issues. Others seek help because they suffer with a sense of disconnection or find themselves repeating unhealthy patterns despite their best effort to change. What we fail to realize is that these symptoms and patterns are often trying to tell us about something essential within ourselves that we had to push aside in our effort to get along and succeed, or they can reflect traumatic experiences from our past that had been too overwhelming to assimilate. Often the original meanings are buried deep within our unconscious with only these symptoms as a trace.

anxiety
, depression, relationships/dating, career transitions, life transitions (marriage, childbirth), body image concerns, chronic illness, trauma, and grief.
If you’ve come here, you’re likely searching for a space for your thoughts and feelings beyond what your friends, family, or partner can provide. You are looking for not only a listener and confidant, but also someone who can reflect back and help you clarify what is on your mind. In a warm, validating, and confidential space, you will gain insight into your patterns- both those that serve you well and those you wish you could change- and test out different ways of understanding and relating that can help you achieve your ultimate goals. Our practice includes therapists specializing in CBT, psychodynamic, and contemplative methods.

My specialties include
anxiety
, mood disorders, distressed couples and families, relationship conflicts and dissatisfaction, parenting, and life stage transitions for pre-teens, adolescents, young and middle age adults.
Every person who chooses therapy does so for a unique combination of reasons, as my patients have revealed to me in twenty years of private practice. No one fits into simple categories, teens especially. Some are impacted by events long ago, others by recent setbacks, while most are triggered by a combination of influences known and unknown. Working with children and adolescents, I understand these manifold pressures are sometimes accompanied by resistance to change, thereby limiting the otherwise positive support offered by family and friends. That’s when I can help.

Anxiety Therapists
What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
