My eight years at Memorial Sloan Kettering, has provided a foundation and framework for helping my patients find meaning through life's most difficult transitions and hardships, such as cancer, chronic illness, grief , pregnancy and infertility, divorce, trauma, and relationship challenges.
I view challenges as opportunities for unprecedented growth, development, and enlightenment. As life twists and turns, it's easy to become disconnected from the things that matter most, even the most meaningful aspects of yourself. My approach to therapy is individualized and integrative, I work with you to learn who you are, why you suffer, and where your resilience lies. With this insight, you'll find freedom from regrets of the past, demands and conflicts of the present, and fear of the future. Together we'll draw upon your strengths and help you move through life with a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and authenticity.

Your depression or anxiety can be a result of a separation, loss of a loved one, a career, physical illness, or a very charged parent-child situation which you are experiencing.
I put you at ease, get to the heart of the matter and help you put things in perspective. If you are grieving I approach your problems with empathy and professional understanding. Problems in the workplace are invitable when you consider how much time many of us spend there. It's important that you recognize persistent patterns of conflict, it is the key to resolution.

Walter offers both individual, couple and group treatment for “anticipated loss ,” loss , grief and bereavement , depression and those separations associated with terminal and long-term chronic illness, the break-up of a long-term relationship, family concerns, addiction and substance abuse issues as well as palliative and end-of-life issues.
My approach in identifying, evaluating, assessing, ameliorating, modifying and/or providing a specific recommendation for adjustment to a disability, problem, or disorder of behavior, character, development, emotion, personality or relationships is by the use of verbal or behavioral methods with individuals, couples, families or groups utilizing a multimodal treatment approach. Logotherapy is the primary "psychotherapeutic orientation" which guides and directs all other treatment methods utilized in this private practice.

I work with people impacted by trauma and loss , including people affected by 9/11, victims of partner abuse and sexual abuse.
I am a psychodynamically trained psychotherapist and have worked with adults and children for 18 years around issues that include PTSD, trauma, relationship problems, employment concerns, parenting questions, grief and loss , depression, and anxiety. I have found that talking can greatly reduce stress and distress and can lead to significant change. People tend to find immediate relief after beginning the process. I also practice Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to help people work through traumas and areas where they are stuck in their lives.

Have you been impacted by loss due to Covid 19? Is isolation and social distancing causing you loneliness, anxiety or conflict in your family? Grief and mourning are being experienced as never before. Our traditional ways of coping - through the participation in rituals and communal gatherings, the hugs of loved ones and being with family - have been upended. The reality of not being able to be with loved ones, especially those who are ill or dying is traumatic. We are also having to negotiate with our family in new ways. I can help you find a path through these challenges.

I help individuals, families, and couples to resolve issues with post-traumatic stress disorder, self-esteem, communication, feeling disconnected to others, assertiveness, adults who were adopted or foster care, depression, grief , anxiety, ADHD, and issues with sexuality.
What if at the end of your therapy session, you felt good, you felt empowered, and felt that you had a sense of direction? Counseling helps in various ways to work through the unspeakable events or emotions in a person's life. Clients are encouraged to create tangible goals for themselves to work on between sessions, which helps to create coping skills and continuity of healing/treatment outside of their sessions. Clients also have the option to participate in more expressive forms of therapy, including the use of art materials.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
