I provide psychotherapy for adult individuals and couples in New York City. My areas of clinical expertise include anxiety and depression, shame, trauma and
sexual abuse
, addictions and compulsions and relationship issues. Many of the individuals who come to see me feel "stuck," unable to achieve their goals, form deep relationships or experience their lives as meaningful. We work together collaboratively, exploring thoughts, feelings, memories, dreams and desires to locate solutions. The couples that I see are struggling with communication; I teach them a new way of listening, allowing them to get to the core of their conflicts.

I have experience working with individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, interpersonal dissatisfaction, and mood instability, who feel uncertain about the course their life may be taking. I work with trauma and believe it comes in many different guises, whether it's an acute incident of
assault
or a long and painful feeling of being misunderstood by one's primary caretaker (i.e. parent or partner). Talk therapy serves to help people alleviate all kinds of suffering as well as developing the capacities for new experience.

I have specialized, extensive experience working with trauma, including healthcare workers, interpersonal violence, sexual
assault
, and military combat.
Here is how I see it- every one of us has encountered unique challenges in our lives that have led us to how we are feeling and functioning in this moment. Often times, these challenges lead us to be harsh, inflexible, and unforgiving to ourselves, resulting in unwanted consequences in our relationships with ourselves, others, our work, and our families. My goal with clients is to help you gain knowledge, skills, and compassion as we explore these challenges and find new ways for you to relate to yourself and the world.

I help hardworking professionals who are struggling with past trauma to overcome their symptoms and improve their personal relationships. A traumatic experience takes many forms, including but not limited to: a move to a new country, a break-up, an abusive work environment, or a crime related trauma including domestic violence, sexual
assault
, and neglect. These traumatic experiences can feel like they're happening over and over even when you're not currently in them, leading to fear and lack of trust. You deserve better than that.

Fabián’s clinical experience includes: a college counseling center, an inpatient traumatic brain injury unit, mental health clinics, mobile crisis unit, substance abuse, HIV, family court and child protective services with a specialization in childhood
sexual abuse
and trauma.
With over 15 years’ experience as a bilingual Psychotherapist working with very diverse populations from adults to adolescents who experience depression, anxiety, trauma and PTSD I learned that not everyone feels comfortable going to speak to a therapist in a traditional setting like an office. This is why I offer “Walk Talk Therapy” and mobile therapy. I want to eliminate as many barriers as possible for you to get the help you need. Just as we are all encouraged to exercise for our physical health, I believe everyone should connect with a professional therapist to strengthen one’s emotional health.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
