Amidst the chaos and pressure of living in the city, life can get challenging. Whether you are looking to work through existing challenges or feel compelled to move in a new direction, I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to do it alone. It might be tempting to just figure things out yourself so that you don't appear "weak" or burden other people especially if it has worked for you in the past but there’s another way! I help high achievers overcome perfectionism that have led to burnout, chronic fear, and feeling like they’ll never be or have enough.

Most of my patients come to therapy struggling with work anxiety, relationship conflicts, periods of depression, problems with self esteem and uncertainty about life goals and choices.
I believe that safety, creativity and collaborative give-and-take are the crucial ingredients for a successful therapy experience. This enables the patient to look at past and present difficulties within the context of a new and potentially transformative relationship. I work to create an environment where patients can get to know and tolerate knowing many parts of themselves. I approach this task with sensitivity, curiosity, humor and warmth.

Do you want to be supported as you undertake the vital and very human project of exploring and growing? I am a white, queer, gender-expansive native West Coaster who’s called NYC home for more than 20 years. A background in writing and theater has given me a deep interest in the human experience and the ways we endeavor to become our best selves. I was drawn to therapy in order to support people in discovering and using their strengths to reach that goal. I also provide an affirming space for LGBTQ+ folks to gain renewed self-compassion and authenticity by better understanding how negative messaging might impact your sense of self.

I make diligent efforts to create a safe space for my clients to openly talk about vulnerable issues. I specialize in working with pre-teens, teens, and adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, trauma-related disorders, adjustment disorders, and suicidal ideation. I also provide therapy for issues that relate to family conflict, divorce, and self-esteem.

It’s normal for individuals and couples to encounter struggles. Perhaps you've gone as far as you can trying on your own to resolve personal or marital distress without resolution. Your coping strategies are not working, and too often you feel distressed. You can choose to be proactive and get resourced by a professional counseling so that you can start on your journey toward change. I’m also able to integrate a Christian perspective for those on a faith-based journey. We can exclude this approach for those not ascribing to any particular spiritual orientation, I'll apply sound clinical expertise in a spirit of warmth and care.

Self Esteem Therapists

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
