When you are physically ill you turn to your doctor, hoping they can help you feel better. Problems like
depression
, anxiety, impulsivity, uncontrollable anger, or low self-confidence can be as painful, if not more so, than physical illness; they can also create serious relationship and work difficulties. I have over 25 years of experience and I have helped many adults, adolescents, and couples who had received limited or no benefit from previous therapists, other doctors, or medications. I work well with people who are skeptical of, or intimidated by, talk therapy.

In my experience, I find it helpful to explore clients challenges and barriers that are keeping making them feel stuck, anxious or
depressed
.
Sometimes in life things do not go according to plan. Ever changing circumstances require flexibility, resilience, patience and a constantly evolving and expanding tool box of skills. Sometimes we do not have all the skills that we need in order to live a fulfilling life we love. When that happens, it can be helpful to lean on others for support. I believes that self-reflection, kindness, understanding and patience are the keys to growth and healing. I have worked and continue to work with a variety of individuals using a client centered approach to aid individuals in achieving their goals for care and life.

I have a strong background in helping clients to successfully work through family of origin issues,
depression
, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, addictive behaviors and career struggles.
Because people are not defined by a diagnosis or demographic, I don't specialize-I individualize. I have extensive experience helping clients identify personal and professional goals while helping them focus on maintaining present commitments and expectations. Within a structured conversation, it is possible to address barriers-situational and emotional-and effectively develop a realistic plan for creating desired changes. I enjoy combining insight oriented psycho dynamic therapy with the goal setting aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy.

My experience includes helping people cope with
depression
, anxiety, loneliness, relationship challenges, psychosomatic issues, health, identity, career, acculturation, immigration, adjustment, and other issues.
In my practice I enjoy helping people in their journey of self-understanding and life enrichment. My approach is primarily Psychodynamic, flexibly integrating elements of other evidence-based psychotherapies, such as CBT and DBT. I work with each person to identify core motivations, and to arrive at a more accurate and adaptive self-understanding. A focus of the collaborative work involves improving awareness of unproductive patterns of behavior. This usually leads to a virtuous cycle of insight, positive feelings, and behavioral activation. Clients gain a greater sense of personal agency and more control over the choices in their lives.

A lot of my clients are coming from high-pressured professional/academic environment experiencing
depression
or/and anxiety.
My work is focused on resolving the original cause of the mental health struggle rather than the coping strategies and compensatory mechanisms. I believe in the transformative power of trauma work, and the capacity of every individual to make sense of their past in order to move more intentionally through the present. While my theoretical orientation is always underpinned by emotional focused, core trauma healing modalities and the psychoanalytic theories, in practice I adapt to each person’s needs as the process unfolds.

I am a Bilingual NY State Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I have experience working with children, young adults, and adults who have experienced a wide range of needs ranging from mood disorders to addiction. I also have experience working with immigrant families, and people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, socio-economic status, and walks of life. I believe people are inherently good and that current emotions and behaviors are triggered by a wide range of factors from past experiences and/or genetics. As a therapist, my approach with clients is engaging and collaborative to facilitate dialogues that lead to positive change.

For so many people, feeling stressed, anxious, and overwhelmed has become the norm. It is common to struggle with life from time to time, but struggling with constant negative thoughts, negative beliefs about yourself, anxiety, and
depression
does not have to be your norm. One of my favorite parts of being a therapist is helping women, men, and young adults feel empowered and secure in themselves, their decision-making skills, and their ability to create and shape the life they want to live. Reaching out is an important first step in your journey to empowerment, security, and breaking old habits that may no longer be serving you.

Depression Therapists
What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
