I see people in individual and couple therapy. I try to balance understanding a couple as a whole as well as the two individuals that form the relationship . I help couples focus on ineffective communication patterns that result in a sense of frustration and discouragement, which push each other away. I encourage each person to express his or her emotional needs more directly and openly. People often express anger and criticism about their partner 's behavior, but have difficulty asking for what they need in a clear, non-attacking way. When each person makes an effort to change, they start to feel less stuck and more hopeful.

I primarily work with individuals and couples looking to explore and navigate areas such as sex, intimacy, trauma, infidelity, gender, communication, conflict, and codependency, as well as some of the more 'minor' day-to-day snags and intimacy blocks that we can experience within relationships and ourselves. I also work with individuals in areas such as: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Eating Disorders, obsessive food and body behaviors, compulsivity, and anxiety. I primarily work with and support people who work in the adult industry, non monogamous folks, kinky people, and people who are navigating their sexualities and identities

As Masud Khan wrote of the dynamic therapeutic relationship with patients, "it is a discipline in which two people work with, affect, develop and change each other.
A graduate of Yale University, NYU Graduate School of Social Work, and NPAP, I feel very blessed to love my work even more today than when I first entered private practice some 30 years ago. Every day brings wonderfully rewarding emotional and intellectual challenge, newness, growth and "realness" in my deeply involved work with my patients.

In the 25 years that I have practiced as a psychoanalyst and psychotherapist in NYC, working with individuals couples and groups, I have come to appreciate that the experience of feeling understood is at the root of well-being. When a person feels deeply understood, there is an almost immediate positive effect, mitigating feelings of anxiety, depression and other painful symptoms. Once a person feels deeply understood they feel safe to explore more challenging issues.

Together, we develop an active working relationship within the therapy space to facilitate insight, build empathy, alleviate negative mood and ultimately heal relationship wounds to build a more secure and satisfying foundation.
My goal is to help you achieve a sense of control over your life, your choices, and your relationships. Oftentimes people come to therapy when they feel dissatisfied with some or all areas of their lives and they can't seem to figure out why or what to do about it. Through empathic listening, warmth, humor, and genuine engagement, I help people gain insight into their unique ways of thinking and operating and then work to build up strong, self-affirming thoughts and compassionate feelings to combat negative patterns. Therapy is hard work, but so worth the investment!

When working with couples , my focus is empowering the couple to take control during the most destabilized time.
Through my years of practice I have come to understand that the most important factor in having a positive and productive therapy experience is the solid collaboration between the therapist and the patients. In a trusting, confidential and empathic environment one can manage challenging issues and find a way towards self improvement and further growth. I provide support and guidance and encourage self determination to help my patients reach goals that are important to them. It's a valuable partnership in which I hope to assist in finding a way to more fulfilling relationships, more satisfaction and greater self esteem.

When you are physically ill you turn to your doctor, hoping they can help you feel better. Problems like depression, anxiety, impulsivity, uncontrollable anger, guilt, or low self-confidence can be as painful, if not more so, than physical illness; they can also create serious relationship and work difficulties. I have over 25 years of experience and I have helped many adults, adolescents, and couples who had received limited or no benefit from previous therapists, other doctors, or medications. I work well with people who are skeptical of, or intimidated by, talk therapy.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
