My professional experience comes from working with youth who are victims of sexual + physical abuse, and/or witnesses to domestic violence in the home, as well as adults who are survivors of childhood
sexual abuse
. sexual violence, and/or domestic violence. I understand therapy can be a confusing and sometimes uncomfortable process. I hope to provide accessible space to process and heal from trauma; allowing you to utilize strengths and practice radical self-acceptance, while also honoring the identities and experiences you hold.

Stress reduction, sexuality, grief and loss, sadness, and childhood
sexual abuse
are just a few common areas of focus for my clients.
Welcome to my art therapy and psychotherapy practice page. For over 25 years I have successfully worked with adults and young people seeking change. I am equally at ease with traditional talk therapy, art therapy, or an integration of the two and collaborate with my clients to establish the safest approach to realize personal intentions. My engagement style is gentle and encouraging, yet more thought-provoking and compassionately challenging when it is advantageous to the therapy.

Some of the groups with which I have had especially extensive experience are: survivors of
sexual abuse
and abusive relationships; creative and performing artists; mental health professionals and students; individuals facing the challenges of midlife and beyond; adolescents and their families; and couples at all stages of the life cycle.
People most often contact me when a critical life event has occurred. They may be feeling anxious or depressed, or have become newly aware of a need to make changes in the way they handle their relationships, emotions, and self-esteem. For some, this is the beginning of a long journey of self-exploration. Others prefer to seek new, more effective tools to address the immediate situation. I think that a good clinician should be able to tailor the treatment to fit the needs and preferences of the client. Too often it is the other way around.

I have treated numerous people who have been abused ranging: from
sexual abuse
to childhood abandonment; often prompting depressions and self-esteem issues.
Sometimes it is a struggle to face thoughts and feelings that you are having. Various events have happened to us in our life that continue to haunt us causing harmful and troubling feelings. These troubling feelings can feel shameful and unforgiveable. It helps to have a safe environment to talk.

As an immigrant and resident of the Caribbean and New York City, my multiple identities and cross-cultural experiences give me a unique perspective regarding cultural and familial expectations regarding
sexual abuse
, duty to family, secrecy, shame, and guilt.
It's often difficult to find a safe space to express and process traumatic events, challenging family dynamics, and violations of consent. Traumatic experiences affect perception of self, how interactions and information is processed, and how environments are navigated. I am here to help you navigate these difficult experiences.

We work with depression, anxiety, bipolar, PTSD, eating disorders, bereavement, BPD, autism, ADHD, addiction,
sexual abuse
, DV, medical illnesses, relationship problems, LGTBQ+, adjustment disorders and forensic cases.
Footprints was started by a therapist who realized that often times the services provided to low socio-economic communities is lacking quality care. We noticed these communities where confronted with long wait times, disrespectful admins, and subpar treatment. The one and only purpose was to exploit the community for profit without providing the level of care deserved. Feel Better Therapy began from the inspiration to provide quality mental health care to the poorest of communities and treating the clients of this community the same way a rich patient would be treated in a clinic treating affluent clients.

My clients often struggle with relationship issues stemming from early childhood trauma; this results in coping mechanisms that work, but may carry a big price tag. They may grapple with
sexual abuse
, partner violence, sexual orientation and/ or disability related issues. Often, these manifest as substance abuse, cutting, communication problems or self- isolating behaviors. They may have friends and family members who do not truly "see" them, and as a result their own view of self is dim. Other clients are coping with situational anxiety and depression related to Covid, and need to establish safety, structure and hope.

Do you feel undeserving of your best life? Or carry a burden of shame from abuse as a child, and need help learning to love yourself? Therapy provides a healing path, and I will walk it with you. As kids we learn reading and math yet not how to handle troubling feelings of fear, sadness, anger, and shame. Psychotherapy teaches you how to love yourself. Relief comes as you drop harsh self-judgments that block moving from where you are now to where you want to be. You learn to discriminate between destructive self-criticism and positive self-correction.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
