I focus on conflict resolution, resolving the effects of life changes ( marriage , divorce, children), the expected anxieties and worries along the way.
A good therapist helps clarify what we already do well and separates out what's useful from what's not. Therapy is about expanding your repertoire, spotting better choices, and enhancing communication skills. When insecurities worm their way into everyday life, and you're more or less "stuck" at an unsatisfying plateau, that's exactly when therapy makes a meaningful difference. On the road from confusion to clarity: a good place to be.

Premarital counseling operates as an open dialogue, in which couple and counselor explore expectations for marriage , strengthen communication and conflict resolution skills and create a reflective space apart from the stresses of wedding planning.
I have a passion for working with couples at all stages of the life cycle. Premaritals, empty nesters, LGBT couples, couples with young children seeking to balance parenting with time for self and partner, couples needing support around sexuality and commitment issues, couples at a crossroads.... Much of my early therapeutic training was in Hospice bereavement counseling. Through that experience I became drawn to therapeutic encounters with the potential for spiritual renewal. In recent years I've connected with that initial sense of generativity and meaning through the practice of couples therapy, most notably in work as a premarital counselor.

I believe that treatment works best when it is tailored to the personality and individual needs of each client. Rather than relying on one theoretical perspective, I utilize a multi-modal approach, which consistently yields faster and longer-lasting results. My approach to treatment is grounded in psychodynamic and inter-personal theory, which I integrate with cognitive-behavioral (CBT) and solution-focused techniques. I have extensive experience dealing with a variety of psychological problems, including depression, anxiety, and trauma, as well as work-related, phase of life, marital , and family issues.

My approach is collaborative, and I strive to create a warm, genuine, authentic space where you can come to understand and identify the unhelpful patterns in your life, and choose to make adjustments that clear your path forward.

It is always a vulnerable choice we make when we decide to attend therapy. Therefore, it is only natural to look for a safe place to be ourselves. To speak, be heard/validated, and to feel secure. Most importantly, to feel listened to without the fear of judgement. I understand. I aim to provide such a place for you where we can also collaborate, help promote self-growth, and self-exploration within your relationship with yourself or with others. Those are difficult situations to navigate and to find yourselves in and the therapeutic process is a personal journey, so seeking the right kind of therapist is important.

I am LGBTQ friendly and work with individuals, and couples of all kinds (co-habitating, married, pre- marital , siblings, business partners, etc.
It may sound simple, but when you are troubled and can't figure out what's in the way of achieving your goals, talk can really be the best medicine. Whether it's relationship disappointment, stalled career plans, new parent challenges, the shock of retirement or other life transitions, painful baffling emotions, self-defeating behaviors or use of substances in a harmful way, talking with someone trained to help you make sense of things can lead to greater control over your actions, choices and decisions. I also teach advanced candidates and provide clinical case consultation of therapists in private practice.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
