Who am I? What am I doing with my life? Why am I having such a hard time? Many of my clients are searching for their place in the world and struggling with big and small questions alike. They might be exploring themselves and their spirituality , or they might be having trouble coping with anxiety or handling relationship issues. My belief is that all questions- large and small- are worth exploring thoughtfully. My goal is to help clients gain a deeper sense of insight and purpose while doing so.

I am a limited permit licensed psychotherapist who has been studying psychology, psychotherapy, and its intersection with spirituality for almost a decade. We all experience anxiety and depression, and life loses meaning at different times, leaving us feeling stuck and without direction. All these symptoms are our soul's way of calling us back home to ourselves when we are astray too far and/or too long from our true selves. Psychotherapy is one of the first steps we can take to find our way back home. Only when we are at home within ourselves we begin to feel at home in the world.

Life can be challenging and I believe that we are each on our own journey to understand what it means to live a full and meaningful life. My philosophy is that we all can benefit from taking time to care for our mental well-being. I treat the whole person, with an appreciation for how the mind and the body are connected, and an understanding of how culture and society influence our lived experiences.

Everyday I am humbled by working with those who have the courage to look in the mirror and work on themselves. I view psychotherapy as an opportunity for growth no matter where you are in your life; whether seeking support in a time of crisis, suffering from a mental illness, working on relationships, or you are simply curious about who you are and how your mind works. My treatment approach is rooted in psychodynamic and relational frameworks although I tailor my technique to each client. I value change beyond symptom resolution but also to increase self awareness and individual growth.

I seek to provide individuals and couples with an engaging, supportive, and collaborative process. My goal is to help you identify and encourage you to explore uncomfortable feelings, or painful conflicts that keep you from having more meaningful, enlivened, and loving connections to yourself and others. Working together we will help you navigate and address these problematic areas including love, family, internal conflict, health, work, friendship, school, trauma, addiction, and loss. With couples we may explore sex/intimacy, premarital counseling, financial issues, betrayal, infertility, communication, and break up.

If you are thinking of calling me, it is because of at least one of these reasons: you have unsuccessfully dedicated considerable energy and time to solving your anxiety, your fears, your obsessions, your losses and trauma, your sadness, your failures in your relationships or in your productivity; you have become tired of repeating the same mistakes and behaviors, and have not been able to change; you have been rejected, you have experienced not being loved, understood, taken in your uniqueness; or you have not done all that you wish to be more courageous, creative, to be more as a person.

For over 20 years, I have worked with individuals and couples who are experiencing emotional challenges within themselves, their circumstances, or in their relationships past or present, personal or professional and those with past trauma. When we don't know what the next step is to move us past these challenges, we can get stuck and from this experience, symptoms of anxiety, depression or both can arise. These symptoms can take us on a downward spiral in our mental-emotional health. It's time then for an experienced professional and attuned listener to assist you back towards the upward spiral of health and well being.

Therapy is a collaboration toward your healing and self-exploration. Finding the right person who is attuned and able to respond to your needs is an essential part of the journey. My approach is, above all else, to be with you with thoughtful attention and curiosity. The ways we listen to you together will uncover your natural ability to nourish healthy aspects of the self, and transform wounded or stuck parts. These fragmentations often result in anxiety, depression, creative blocks, issues with self esteem or relationships. I also see couples with difficulties navigating conflict, communicating, & understanding the other.

I am available for in person and remote therapy. The decision to enter Psychotherapy is a courageous one. When you have tried everything you can think of to feel better emotionally, but nothing quite works, it can be disheartening. Fortunately, that's where the help of a Psychotherapist can come in. With determination and commitment to the therapy process, it is never too late for anyone to change and live a happier more fulfilled life. For the past 33 years I have been in Private Practice working with clients (adults 18 and older) to do just that, change their lives. What makes me a unique psychotherapist is discussed below.

I strongly believe in the collaborative nature of therapy - the creative engagement between the client and therapist, working toward a common goal: to help bring a greater sense of well being to you, the client - to your life, your psyche, your body, your relationships, your career, your home. I have a background in film, which makes working with people from the arts a natural fit (though I love to work with clients from all walks of life). Relationship concerns, career concerns, depression, anxiety, existential questioning, trauma, illness, bereavement and addictions are some of the areas in which I have experience.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
