I specialize in depression and anxiety. Sometimes we are depressed /anxious because of natural events (e.g. a family loss, career challenges, etc...), and other times we feel depressed /anxious without knowing why, as if our mind was hiding the distress source. Whether we are able or unable to make out the reasons of our depression /anxiety, therapy can be a journey of self-discovery to alleviate these problems.

I work with people who suffer from depression , anxiety, phobias, childhood and more recent traumas, addictions, physical complaints that have no physiological explanations, and many other difficulties.
Before I came to New York, I was a lecturer in medical school and a neuroscientist. I was interested in the wonders of the brain from a scientist's point of view. My focus, over the last decade, has shifted from the brain to the mind. I think of psychoanalysis as a profound journey of understanding of oneself. Its purpose is to help people to understand feelings, behaviors, and habits that are troubling to them and to enrich their lives with new creativity, more fulfilling careers, and more meaningful relationships.

What's keeping you from meeting the world the way you want to? Many people seek therapy because of a specific set of symptoms or problems. Others feel more generally stuck, fed up, or confused by patterns that they cannot break despite continued efforts. I work with adults, couples, and adolescents struggling with relationship issues, depression , anxiety, grief, addiction, sexual identity, and the impact of traumatic experience. Together, we will create an exploratory space that fosters emotional authenticity, relief from shame, and a restored sense of vitality.

I provide individual, couples, and group therapy for adults struggling to find their way through anxiety, depression , life transitions, relationship challenges, grief and loss, and substance use.
One of my favorite quotes is from Leonard Cohen: "There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in." Our brokenness can cause us so much pain and turmoil, and yet it is that very brokenness or imperfection that can help us uncover our greatest potential. As a psychotherapist, my goal is to help you tap into that luminous potential in order to unlock more choices in your life and to further personal growth.

La’Tish practices from a holistic, culturally affirming and strength-based approach. She is passionate about providing women and couples with the supportive care that helps them thrive. Many of her clients feel exhausted balancing their multiple roles and even though their drive leads to high achievement, it burns them out, leaving them with anxiety, depression , and increased challenges in their relationships. La’Tish helps these clients unpack the stuff that has been hard to deal with alone, find balance in their lives and reconnect with their values within a supportive, non-judgmental therapeutic space.

I employ evidence-based interventions with adolescents and adults who are struggling with worry, depression , identity, and navigating relationships (with themselves and others). Many of my clients are "high functioning" in that they get up each day, go to work or school (or both) and white knuckle it through the day. Yet, they also contend with issues like pervasive negative thoughts, overwhelming feelings of anxiety or loneliness, struggles with eating behavior and body image, overcoming trauma, focusing attention, and managing difficult relationships. I work with clients to lessen the effects of these struggles on their lives.

I strongly believe in the collaborative nature of therapy - the creative engagement between the client and therapist, working toward a common goal: to help bring a greater sense of well being to you, the client - to your life, your psyche, your body, your relationships, your career, your home. I have a background in film, which makes working with people from the arts a natural fit (though I love to work with clients from all walks of life). Relationship concerns, career concerns, depression , anxiety, existential questioning, trauma, illness, bereavement and addictions are some of the areas in which I have experience.

I work with adults struggling with anxiety, depression , relationship issues, work-related problems, and many other issues.
Psychotherapy is a gift you can give yourself. If you're feeling down or you can never fully relax; it might be hard to imagine you could feel better. Maybe you keep repeating unsatisfying relationship patterns even though you want something else. These challenges, as well as many others, can interfere with the joyful, satisfying life you want. Psychotherapy can help you understand parts of yourself you don't fully know. Ultimately, this enables you to experience greater freedom and to explore new possibilities. Psychotherapy involves emotional, intellectual, and bodily experience and can therefore be deeply transformational.

Issues I treat include anxiety, depression , trauma, work and school inhibitions, childhood behavior problems and parenting concerns, among others.
Life can be difficult at times. Many people who come to a therapist begin by saying they just want to talk to someone, they are unhappy, anxious or troubled by difficulties at work or in their relationships but don't know why. I view psychological symptoms as attempts to communicate something essential and understandable about our suffering, fears, and wishes-the emotional meanings of our personal history. I believe in respecting my clients' authority in their own lives, including in the therapy process.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
