Are you grieving, feeling sad or depressed, anxious, have uncontrollable
anger
or feelings of low self-esteem? These and other forms of inner conflict can be overwhelming and debilitating. They can cause physical pain as well as fatigue, sleeplessness, eating disorders and a host of other symptoms and behaviors. Psychotherapy can address these issues and help you to lead a more peaceful and fulfilling life. Finding the right therapist is crucial and can be challenging. Location and insurance are practical concerns, but should not be the primary consideration. The rapport between you and your therapist is key to successful treatment.

I have a special interest in
anger management
and believe that if you can handle your
anger
effectively, you'll do better with other emotions as well.
I am a cognitive psychologist -- a practical person who will help you understand: What are your goals, and what is blocking you from reaching them? We'll work together to get a handle on how your thoughts may be impeding your progress, and, more importantly, how to adjust your thoughts to increase your chances of success.

Contacting a therapist can feel awkward and scary. Be assured that your internal and external life can and will improve. We can work at a pace you feel comfortable with. We all want freedom from our emotional pain. Worries or anxiety,
anger
or depression, insomnia, relationship conflict or traumatic memories may lead to escape or excessive dependence upon externals like food, substances, events, experiences and relationships for relief. Escape never leads to peace. Thankfully, we all can learn to find a dependable source of peace inside, in our minds and hearts, no matter the external circumstances. I can help you get there.

While navigating your inner world and relationships, you may be feeling uncomfortable, overwhelmed, or alone. I work with individual clients experiencing interpersonal stress—whether it be rooted in anxiety, depression, or
anger
. If you’re holding unresolved emotions like irritability, stress, or sadness, you might be experiencing relationship strain with family, conflict at work, or difficulty expressing your feelings in an intimate partnership. If you’re a loved one of someone living with borderline personality disorder or severe and persistent mental illness, you may be feeling helpless or struggling to find supportive direction.

It's amazing: talking in therapy is such a simple act, with powerful results. What keeps getting in the way of satisfaction--in relationships, in work? The patient and I form a sort of detective team to investigate this question. When self-defeating patterns of thinking and behavior come into conscious awareness, it becomes possible to make informed decisions, to act in ways that make life better. Therapy is serious, but it can be something to enjoy and look forward to. Depression and anxiety, isolation,
anger
, loneliness--all are states that we can address in treatment, with understanding, patience and respect.

You’ve come a long way on your journey to find help. To get to this point, you might have had to push past stigma, criticism, toxic family relationships, or self-doubt. Even when depression, life transitions, trauma, or
anger
have seemed insurmountable, you’re here today, and that takes more strength than you might know. I support clients grieving losses of all kinds—whether that’s a breakup, death of a loved one, or end of a job. Bereavement often shuts out hope in jarring ways. I offer clients hope that life can be what they dreamed of before, and that there’s a pathway back to vibrance.

Struggling to cope with intense worry, sadness, or
anger
can feel overwhelming and lonely. Reducing alcohol or other substance use can be similarly isolating and intertwined with negative emotions. Recognizing that there is a problem can be the largest hurdle, but finding a way to make those changes does not have to be. You may have already made attempts to change on your own and make things better, but it hasn’t quite worked out. Often, what to do and when to do it is not clear.

Anger Management Therapists
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.
How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.
Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.
What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
