I have helped those suffering with depression and anxiety, major life transitions, grief and loss, relationship conflicts, psychotic experiences, complex trauma (such as emotional, physical and sexual abuse ) substance use, as well as struggles with self-worth and feeling abandoned.
I am a psychologist who works with adults of all ages, using a psychodynamic, relational approach in individual, couples and group psychotherapy. I am keenly interested in how your past relationships with caregivers, family, and friends have impacted you-that is, influenced the way you think, feel, and orient yourself in the world. As we explore what is occurring between us, or in your other relationships, we may uncover older wounds, past over-accommodations to or defenses against relational trauma, as well as other assumptions you carry forward from the past that are no longer functional. This is a main focus of our work together.

After working for the past 6.5 years closely with survivors of sexual abuse at a prominent NYC hospital, I have developed a strong passion for continuing my work with survivors. Recently, many survivors are being triggered by events in the worlds of entertainment, national, and local news. The increased reporting has created significant public awareness leading people to flashback to painful and traumatic events of childhood and adult sexual abuse . You do not have to live alone with those memories, thoughts, feelings, anxiety, and depression. If untreated, the effects of trauma can have a lasting life impact.

When words alone are not enough, creative explorations can provide a safe and supportive way to connect and work toward personal growth. For people who are articulate and intelligent, connecting what you know to what you feel can sometimes be surprisingly difficult. I work on connecting thoughts and feelings through a combination of talking, exploring familiar songs, creating improvised music, vocalizing, movement, visual arts, and mindfulness techniques. No prior experience in creative arts is needed to fully benefit from creative arts psychotherapy.

I believe that a safe and supportive therapeutic alliance can help clients work through their unconscious conflict, rectify their maladaptive reactions towards themselves and their relationships, and develop healthy coping mechanisms. As a mental health counselor, I strive to help clients reach their full potential and improve their quality of life by cultivating self-awareness, self-control, and self-knowledge. My multicultural identity engenders my commitment to diversity, where I believe that all therapists must recognize and accept that each client is unique, multi-faceted, and has an intersectional identity.

Even though you have friends and family, you still feel alone, different somehow. No matter how successful you are, you feel empty, anxious, and afraid. You believe wholeheartedly that you're defective or too much. It doesn't have to be that way forever. You can learn to connect in safe and trusting ways not only with others, but also with yourself. A history of trauma, abuse, abandonment, neglect - you've been told your whole life to just get over it. It doesn't work that way. I'm not going to lie - therapy is tough work. Overcoming oppression and trauma doesn't come through trite tips & tricks you can get in any self-help book.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
