Together, we can embrace authenticity, overcome feelings of shame and guilt, and help you define your unique relationship to your culture.
If you are South Asian American, listen up: Being your own person does not make you less of a Brown person; it makes you a more genuine one. If you have been ever labeled the "Black sheep" of your community or family, been told that you are too "Whitewashed", "Too South Asian", or "Not Brown enough", you've come to the right place. Maybe you've struggled to belong in your community, but you belong right here! That's why I go by "The Bad Indian Therapist", because as someone who was raised Indian and Catholic, I've also been called these things too. We won't fit anyone's definition of "South Asian", so let's be "bad" together!

I also provide Couples Therapy and Forensic Evaluations for asylum seekers.
Therapy is a journey of self-awareness and liberating yourself from roadblocks that get in the way of living a full and meaningful life. It is also an avenue to learn techniques to manage your depression, anxiety or other emotional distress caused by a major life change or traumatic event. I'm interested in your long-term growth and will assist you in identifying unconscious processes that make it difficult for you to move forward with success. My practice is an eclectic mix of mindfulness, symptom management and psychoanalysis that promotes transformation and freedom.

I am a psychologist who works with adults of all ages, using a psychodynamic, relational approach in individual, couples and group psychotherapy. I am keenly interested in how your past relationships with caregivers, family, and friends have impacted you-that is, influenced the way you think, feel, and orient yourself in the world. As we explore what is occurring between us, or in your other relationships, we may uncover older wounds, past over-accommodations to or defenses against relational trauma, as well as other assumptions you carry forward from the past that are no longer functional. This is a main focus of our work together.

I have been in practice 25 years. These days, the modalities that are my center are AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy) and EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples ), both are attachment & bonding based, and rely on feeling experientially & expressing primary emotion. I use EMDR (Flash technique too) and hypnosis as adjunctive therapies when needed, for example when treating trauma. I offer Life Coaching with a focus on personal fulfillment and relationships. I work for healing, and believe our wildest dreams can come true--even some we haven't dare dream yet.

I believe that people are shaped by their relationships and life experiences. I work to create a trusting relationship where we can explore your difficulties and improve your life. Many of the people I work with are quite thoughtful and accomplished but they are not happy. They feel that they could benefit from personal inquiry into the problems of living that they are experiencing. Having complex emotions and struggles is normal. It is an aspect of life. But it’s best not to live with it all alone. We need to express our grief, confusion and fear, and we need someone to listen, to respond and to empathize.

You are brave because you are here, reading and thinking how things can be better. It is a big step to acknowledge when something is amiss, that the hurt you feel is real and undeniable–your shadow for many years. I know that somehow, despite your honest efforts, the same mistakes can unfold–the change you strive for can slip away. Beginning therapy means facing the world with an ally. I will believe in you, and together we will tear down the barriers that have prevented you from living the life you were meant to live.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
