I offer an additional range of services for mental health and substance use via tele-health such as 1:1, couples , and family therapy.
You are brave because you are here, reading and thinking how things can be better. It is a big step to acknowledge when something is amiss, that the hurt you feel is real and undeniable–your shadow for many years. I know that somehow, despite your honest efforts, the same mistakes can unfold–the change you strive for can slip away. Beginning therapy means facing the world with an ally. I will believe in you, and together we will tear down the barriers that have prevented you from living the life you were meant to live.

Who you are--how you think, feel and interact--has been shaped by many relationships over time. So it makes sense that a new relationship --with a therapist attuned to subtle but essential aspects of your experience--can facilitate discovery and change. I work deeply and sensitively with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse, eating disorders, and relationship difficulties. My aim is not only to help alleviate symptoms but also to help you gain access to a fuller range of emotions, greater freedom of choice, and a more vital sense of self.

I specialize in treating couples from marginalized and minority groups.
The word Sankofa means "one must go back in order to move forward". The idea is that in order to move forward into our highest potential, we must use the best of what was in our past. As a relational therapist who primarily works from a Solution-Focused approach, the word Sankofa reflects my belief that learning from our experiences in the past can contribute to healing in the present and future. I believe we are all capable of change through an effective solution. I have experience bringing about the changes that will lead to a healthier and happier life.

As a clinical psychologist working with individuals and couples , my aim is to help people understand and change emotionally distressing patterns in their lives or tackle specific challenges that are restricting their well being, relationships and effectiveness in work. Stressful life circumstances and counterproductive ways of coping can produce long standing frustrations as well as feelings of anxiety and depression, or can produce a crisis, all requiring new ways of thinking and functioning to move forward. My approach is both psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral with a focus on finding the most useful therapeutic language to reach each individual or couple.

One is the hope you bring to treatment, another is the quality of the relationship between client and therapist.
At different times in our lives we need different things. In a crisis, we may look for support and guidance. In times of relative calm, we might be curious about how to change a long-standing pattern of being. We may be looking for ways to manage anxiety or depression, improve relationships, find a direction, heal trauma or grieve a loss. Sometimes we know what we need, and many times we can’t quite figure out what's wrong. Generally, we come to therapy to feel better. Therapy can be a place to do that. Si busca ayuda en una crisis, un cambio en manera de ser, o alivio de problemas relacionales, ansiedad, o depression, lo/a invito.

With time, openness to change, and a strong therapeutic relationship , my goal is to listen and empathize with each client’s experience and collaboratively work towards customizing coping skills that will help them heal and grow; achieving the healthiest versions of themselves.
My experience is in working with adults in both individual and group settings. I help clients who struggle with stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, academic issues, interpersonal relationships, identity issues, family and cultural issues, and life changes. I am interested in working with individuals, couples , and families from diverse backgrounds. I believe that while we might not have control over the things that happen to us, we can control how it affects our present and future. Our mental health must be treated with the same vigor we treat our physical health. Know that while pain may be inevitable; suffering is optional.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
