As a therapist, my goal is to establish a strong therapeutic alliance built on warmth, acceptance, and trust with you. Using curiosity and compassion, I believe in creating a non-judgmental environment where each client is able to better understand and explore how they relate to their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. I believe in a collaborative approach to therapy and ensuring that treatment is culturally sensitive and informed by all aspects of a client's identity. With a focus on trust and acceptance, my intention is to cultivate a therapeutic relationship where clients feel safe and connected.

We get so many messages in our lives about what is expected and how we "should" be living; social media, friends, and culture can all provide an idea of what we should be reaching for, which can often feel confusing and frustrating. If we grow up with family dysfunction and trauma, it can seem even more confusing. We struggle with these expectations and somehow still feel we are coming up short. It can become an exhausting pursuit! It gets harder and harder to listen to our own voice, and what our needs are.

Everyone comes to therapy for their own unique reasons — perhaps stressors have become overwhelming, relationships difficult to manage, or symptoms impossible to ignore. Therapy should be an authentic conversation aimed at understanding whatever it is in your life that you find challenging. I utilize a warm and practical approach to address both current issues and their roots.

As a counselor based in hu manistic and relational cultural theory, I believe you are the person who knows yourself best. Throughout life, circumstances leading to disruptions in well-being can produce self-doubt, a negative view of self, and low self-worth. Even through these times, each person still has autonomy and the ability to make effective decisions that fit in accordance with their lives. One of my goals is to expand self-awareness so you can live in a more purposeful way that aligns with your values.

I treat individuals and couples using both short and long term treatment techniques. There is a writers' saying: 'How can I know what I think until I hear what I say?' This applies to psychotherapy as well. Talking about your problems and concerns with a trained, empathic listener is often the best way to discover both your issues and their solutions. I use a great deal of humor and compassion in my work. Psychotherapy is particularly helpful in working with relationships, career issues and ambivalence in choices.

I work psychoanalytically (seeking unconscious motivations) and cognitively, looking at present issues and challenges. This means that I utilize both short-term AND long-term therapeutic methodologies. You find yourself alone, unable to share your joys or sorrows with anyone. Holding onto painful feelings, it's challenging to build or sustain relationships, and you're left wondering why. It seems like everyone you meet eventually disappoints you, leaving you feeling isolated. You tell yourself you don't need anyone, but deep down, you know we all crave connection

We are defined by our relationships. Relationship to ourselves, to others and to the world. Relationship dynamics get formed in attempts to succeed in life. Though sometimes we may succeed in relationship at certain points in life, those same dynamics can also become unproductive. At that point we can use the dynamic to understand the problem and determine the adjustments that then lead to success once again.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
