I have worked with people experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma/PTSD, and a variety of other life circumstances. Ideally, you are ready to jump in, even when things get tough, and will communicate openly to keep moving forward. Together, we’ll set and adjust goals as needs evolve, celebrating progress along the way. My clients stay dedicated, even when faced with setbacks, and are always open to setting new goals as they achieve new milestones.

As a clinical psychologist the most important aspect of my work is to create an environment where clients feel safe to actively engage in the psychotherapy process. My approach is referred to as "integrationist;" incorporating aspects of psychodynamic, cognitive, and mindfulness therapy. I treat difficulties associated with mood, anxiety, trauma, addiction and ADHD, as well as more basic problems in living (i.e. relationship, employment). I welcome clients from all backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, sexual preference and genders.

Being vulnerable can be scary and unpredictable and amid life's trials and tribulations, it can be difficult to get back in tune with who we were before the silence became too loud. If you are looking for ways to take control of your life by reconnecting with yourself, gaining coping skills, and modifying your thoughts and behavior, you are halfway there. No matter where you are on your mental health journey, I will provide you with a safe space, tools, and the support you need to achieve your goals.

Why therapy and why now? Life is too short to accept half measures. If you find yourself ping-ponging between the past (depression) and the future (anxiety), you cannot be fully present in the here and now, where life is happening for you- and not to you! Utilizing mindfulness, you will learn how to be safe in the present moment, so that you can begin building a foundation of self-care. From this grounded place, you choose whether we go on an "archeological dig" using psychodynamic psychotherapy, attachment theory, trauma- informed care, or whether we focus on skill building using CBT, DBT or other evidenced- based practices.

Psychodynamic therapy offers the opportunity to speak about that which may feel unspeakable, shameful, or muddled. The dual process of speaking and observing what emerges is useful for confronting a range of symptoms and seemingly fixed patterns. Through careful listening and interpretation, I aim to foster insight and curiosity about your inner world that will open up the possibility for changes to be made. You are not a fixed narrative that has been handed to you, but an indeterminate and distinct human with untold truths that only you can tell.

"When I begin to work with a patient I realize that together we face the challenge of exploring all the complexities, confusion, and hurt that are embedded in the problem for which they seek therapy. With a deep commitment to holding a space for all that is there and listening for the unspoken feelings that lie beneath, I bear witness to the experiential unfolding of what has not before been expressed. Once this happens, patients come into contact with their authentic self, the confusion begins to clear, the hurt sets about healing, and there is trust in this emergent self."

Our social world can be an overwhelming, stressful place that leaves parts of ourselves unseen and unheard. I believe in creating a holding space, a place of openness and compassion, where you can dare to be yourself. In psychotherapy, we come together to better understand how elements of your internal and external worlds are interacting (or not interacting). Sometimes what has long been unseen and unheard can transform into awareness. Together, we can look at whatever emerges to find new ways of understanding your experiences. With care and support, small steps forward, however subtle, can yield transformation.

The people I work with seek therapy for all the emotional turmoil life throws at you: pressures to perform, anxiety, marriage and family stress, and changes in mood. Others I see come to therapy with a broader wish to understand their own nature, to see themselves and timeworn habits more clearly. In each case, my goal is not to simply fix problems in your life, but rather to help you gain control when it seems like the world around you is spinning. For clients interested in couples therapy or family therapy, my goal is to move your relationship(s) from distress to security, trust, and understanding.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
