The only way to change is to define who you are and then change your habits to align with who your new self is. It's as simple as that, but the problem that arises the most with the clients who come into my office is; who is this new person I want to be. This can be difficult, because many times there are many underlying factors that prevent us, or that we perceive prevent us from taking the steps we need to move forward. It is my job is to help you realize what great potential you have inside you already. With that said let's work together to pick apart the old ideas you have of yourself, and create a new pathway forward.

I want to get to know you. I want to get to know you so that I can help you to get to know yourself--your original self, the self you are today, the self you want to be tomorrow. I want you to get to know me. I have more than twenty years of experience helping people help themselves. I have an M.Div. degree (Master of Divinity), an MSW degree, and I am a NYS Licensed Clinical Social Worker. If I cannot help you, I will refer you to someone I think can.

As the owner of Ruppert Counseling, my goal is to help you build meaningful change — on your terms. Therapy should be a space where you feel understood, thoughtfully challenged, and supported in examining the patterns that keep you stuck. I work with mood disorders, anxiety, substance use, anger, and relationship dynamics. My approach is active and collaborative, integrating psychodynamic insight with Motivational Interviewing (MI), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to create a plan tailored to your goals and values.

Many people come to therapy feeling like they’re just holding it together — overwhelmed, burned out, and unsure where to turn. You may avoid people, replay conversations, or wonder why things feel so heavy. On the outside, you might seem okay, but inside it's a different story. If you're running on fumes and trying to keep up with life, you're not alone.

Therapy should not only focus on relieving your symptoms and distress but is also about building greater capacities for dealing with life's inevitable stresses and anxieties. I believe it is important to actively collaborate with you to find out what it is you want from therapy and to periodically evaluate the progress toward these goals. I look to tailor each person's therapy to their specific presenting problems and goals so that they will be able to feel better and feel more capable in facing life's challenges.

Difficulties with intimacy are prevalent. People are pessimistic and frightened of marriage. Levels of anxiety, depression, and "pushing away" defense mechanisms are increasing and we tend to seek the emotionally familiar. We fall in love based on our earliest experiences with bonding, or lack of it. Thus, if these feelings are based upon aberrations of bonding, we are constantly drawn to those who cannot bond & connect. If you continually repeat the same mistakes in your life you may be emotionally "stuck" due to these early feelings.

I believe therapy should feel safe, supportive, and engaging—especially for young children. I specialize in play therapy, helping kids explore feelings, build coping skills, and express themselves in a way that feels natural. I work with children who struggle with attention and focus, behavior challenges, anxiety, and emotional regulation. My goal is to meet every child where they are, using warmth, curiosity, and developmentally appropriate tools to help them grow with confidence, feel understood, and build emotional resilience.

To be heard in a non-judgmental, empathic way provides an environment to safely explore your relationship with others and with yourself. To be heard and have that understanding communicated in clear, compassionate terms helps support you while we explore its meaning and consequences. When better ways of dealing with life stressors are discovered, unsuccessful ways of coping are automatically shed and new skills appear.

Come in. Talk. Let's figure it out together. There isn't a right answer for everything — and I'm not here to hand you one. My goal is for you to feel like the one guiding the decisions in your own life. We'll have sessions that are easy and sessions that are hard. We'll sit in the difficult moments together. And then, we'll work to find what you actually want — and start building the bridge between where you are and where you want to be.

I am a therapist who believes that anxiety is at the root of all suffering. Anxiety and fear are synonymous. We, as human beings, can learn to look directly at our fear and see that it never held any real power. We can overcome our anxiety and live the life we've always wanted. All it takes is the courage to look at our fear plainly, seeing that we have been defending against it all our lives, and that this is no longer necessary. We can put the burden of anxiety down once and for all.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
