Transgender Therapists in Long Island City, NY

Averie Jiang
Pre-Licensed Professional, MA
Long Island City, NY 11101
I worked in two LGBTQ non-profit organizations in China, where I supported gender nonconforming individuals, lesbian, bisexual women, and transgender individuals.
As an autistic non-binary therapist specializing in serving LGBTQ+ individuals, people of color, and neurodivergent people, I understand the challenges of finding a therapist who truly gets you. With a focus on queer issues and identity exploration, I aim to create a safe and inclusive space for all. I adopt a feminist approach that promotes open dialogue about social issues and encourages advocacy to reclaim agency.

You may be navigating gender identity, sexuality, non-monogamy, trauma, mood challenges, or complex relationship dynamics and finding that most spaces do not fully understand you.
My work focuses on trauma and PTSD, mood disorders, neurodivergence, sex and intimacy concerns, substance use, and relationship challenges, especially non-monogamy. Together, we move beyond surface-level insight to create meaningful, sustained change, both internally and in your relationships.

Listen, I get it. Your 40s and 50s hit different. Between parenting a child with special needs, caring for aging parents, running your business—or juggling all of it—you're stretched impossibly thin. You're anxious, burned out, maybe carrying trauma, while everyone leans on you. I see you holding it all together, and I'm here to tell you: you deserve support too. Together, we'll find calm in your chaos, set boundaries without the guilt trip, and reconnect you with what YOU need. Therapy isn't selfish—it's survival. Let's stop just getting through the day and start actually living again.

I work with all types of clients (couples, children, individuals) but especially marginalized groups (especially LGBTQ+) who need a place to feel comfortable, accepted, understood and respected. A place where feelings are valued, validated and matter. You may have been displaced, made to feel wrong, unaccepted and unwelcome. You want a safe space where you can express yourself freely and not be judged as society and others may have judged you. A place where you can be heard and work on feeling proud and wonderful with who you are and process negative experiences so you can be fully your authentic self and enjoy a fulfilling life.

Many of the people who find their way to therapy with me have spent years feeling like they're "too much": too sensitive, too emotional, too intense, or simply different. They often carry a quiet belief that something about them needs to change. They may appear capable on the outside while privately questioning themselves at every turn. Therapy offers a different possibility. Instead of learning how to become less yourself, we begin by understanding yourself with curiosity and compassion. Because every part of you belongs—even the parts you've learned to hide.

Emotions make us who we are, but sooner or later, the world teaches us ways of dealing with feelings that end up hurting us. We devise brilliant adaptations to belong, achieve, or survive, only to find out one day that those solutions have become a problem. If we learn (as most of us do) that some of our emotions are unwelcome, "wrong," or "too much," we also learn to avoid them, suppress them, panic about them, project them onto others, numb them with addictions, drown them out with love or accolades, or shame ourselves for them. Our adaptations can accumulate until what once looked like a haven can start to feel like a cage.

Transgender Therapists
As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
