Adult and adolescent work is focused on goal oriented treatment.
A course of treatment must feel absolutely right for the client to experience success. I feature a collaborative model in order to obtain optimal results. With more than 20 years of experience, my approach to therapy focuses on an individual's issues as well as their strengths in order to maximize both potential and growth. During the course of my career I have had the opportunity to study and to put into practice many different therapeutic techniques. As I continue to practice, I utilize these techniques to best target specific issues for individual personalities.

“I’ve heard it said that people come into our lives for a reason. Bringing something we must learn. And we are led to those who help us most to grow if we let them and we help them in return“.I’d like to thank Stephen Schwartz for borrowing his lyrics from Wicked, as I’ve always seen the journey of therapy as the need to grow and learn how to navigate life’s many challenges. In our fast paced society, many people feel inadequate, worried, and that they go through the motions of daily living. Children often face impossible tasks and are made to feel “less than”. Others have suffered from trauma and need help to heal from suffering.

It gets steadily more difficult getting through days with the stress of living up to world standards. Do you find yourself increasingly overwhelmed, anxious, or upset? Do these feelings end up affecting your sense of self-worth, your decisions, or your relationships? Maybe it’s become impossible to manage your time, motivate yourself, or set healthy boundaries. Or maybe you overthink everything, and if it's not daily stressors getting to you, it's familiar situations or memories from your past.

We all experience life challenges and emotional distress. While we may have been encouraged to believe in the importance of handling things independently, that belief can actually cause more pressure and result in a less secure feeling. The stronger path to a solution may be found with the help of someone else, but who do you turn to? Family and friends often think they know what's best without really attending to your personal preferences, and others may overreact or simply not understand. I can offer you a place that is emotionally safe to explore your difficulties and to build your strengths.

Sometimes your usual ways of coping with stress and difficult situations stop working. This can leave you feeling ill-equipped to manage aspects of your life. As a result, you may be feeling sad, worried, scared, angry, and/or overwhelmed. I strive to help people better understand the nature of their problems and develop more effective ways to cope with them. I believe greater self-awareness, in combination with behavior changes, can lead to a richer and more satisfying life.

We all experience personal challenges and issues in our lives. Anyone who is struggling with a personal concern can seek counseling. We are made to enjoy relationships with people around us. When a relationship suffers, it can bring sadness, distress and pain. Emptiness and void can arise, and it may lead to deeper confusion. No issue is too big or too small to ask for support. You don't need to handle it all alone. I can have you, receive help, and claim fullness of your life.

Prioritizing emotional wellness optimizes quality of life. My passion for helping people heal their inner lives grew out of exploring and understanding the images I created. I bring this guiding principle to every client centered therapeutic encounter. Creative expression and verbal psychotherapy together in an inclusive, gentle and supportive environment are a potent treatment for individuals of all ages seeking emotional stability. Perhaps you feel overwhelmed, down, stressed, or anxious. The activity of artmaking provides relaxation, it holds and clarifies the source of tension, it gently reveals the inner workings of the psyche.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
