Problems include: (1)adults who are anxious or depressed,(2)couples having difficulties in a relationship, (3)problems in children and teens, (4) improvement in parenting skills, (5)anger management, and (6)adults and children with attention deficit disorder who are willing to train their brains to focus by utilizing an aggressive cognitive therapy approach.
I don't try to use the same type of therapy for everybody because every person is different. First, I figure out what the problem is and only then can I figure out what to do about it. Attorney Martin Kehoe, Esq. says "Dr. Hoorwitz is one of the least pretentious professionals . . .His humility is matched by his integrity and professional competence.... and as the most insightful and helpful psychologist available to families .... and I am confident that families who seek his help will be well served." -----To schedule an office visit on your own without waiting to talk to me, go to: calendly.com/scheduleaaron

Since 2012 I have had extensive training working with children and families who have experienced trauma, truancy, anxiety/depression, victims of domestic violence, chemical dependency, eating disorders, struggles with parenting skills as well as other stressors that may affect us at some point in our lives.
Have you ever just felt stuck? Do you ever think therapy is just not for me or think to yourself, is it worth it? Well, believe me, it is. One of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. My belief is that healing is a collaborative endeavor that requires honest caring without judgment. During sessions we will focus on creative therapeutic techniques in order to help you become the best possible you you can be.

I am a New York State Certified Therapeutic Foster Parent , was a Social Work Case Manager in pediatrics at Albany Medical Center and also worked at Berkshire Farm Center and The Devereux Foundation.
I have chosen to be a Marriage and Family therapist because I wholeheartedly believe that we as individuals do not live in silos. How we behave, react to situations, and interact with our loved ones, peers, and the community as a whole is influenced by our interactions with those systems. My role is to help you identify those interaction cycles and then make adjustments where you would like to see them. I have chosen to work with the Mind & More because I believe that our "health" does not lie in one category. To be healthy, we must tend to our mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

I grew up in the Capital Region but moved to the west coast to pursue my graduate education and ended up staying for twenty years. I recently moved back to the area and am excited to be living life at a slower pace. In the process of opening a new office space in downtown Troy where we will be able to offer not only therapy services but integrate other areas of wellness into each person's wellness plan. I am continuing to offer online sessions utilizing a HIPPA compliant video platform. Lastly, I do still offer a 30 minute free consultation to answer any questions and/or determine if you feel we would be a good fit.

There are many times in life when we deal with issues that are difficult to put into words. I have found that a combination of art therapy, play therapy, with more traditional Cognitive Behavioral talk therapy give people the option of approaching issues from a variety of perspectives. I also have a background in mindfulness practice to help you learn to gain insight into your reactions to issues in your life. I work with children, adults and families to help you develop positive solutions in your life.

Hey, welcome. I know the process of trying to find the right therapist can feel overwhelming. When I’ve looked for therapists for myself or as referrals for others, what I generally want to know is who the therapist is, what kind of person they are. Will they get me? Will they judge me? Are they going to actually call me on my stuff, but, in a nice way? These questions make sense. Therapy is vulnerable, it can be raw and real in ways we generally aren’t, even in very close relationships. Change is often hard and sometimes really scary but if you’re ready, I will meet you there.

Are you finding this time in your life is bringing more overwhelm, anxiety, sadness, anger or pain than it is joy? Does life feel very different than you imagined it would right now? Especially when our experience feels very different than what we had expected, it can bring up confusion, self doubt, & worst of all that deep down voice-criticizing, putting us down and have us wondering is it just me? Big life changes, things such as starting college, getting married, pregnancy or new motherhood & more, have a way of bringing up some of these deeper held struggles and fears to surface.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
