Issues around intimacy, loss, trust and shame are often central in my work with both individuals and couples. Through our dialogues about your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, you will gain new perspectives that end harmful repetitions. I encourage compassion and mastery over negative thinking, and believe these practices improve your relationship to yourself and others. I aim to provide a caring, honest, and illuminating environment in which you feel heard and understood. I offer thoughtful engagement with your past and present circumstances and believe in a “partnership" model rather than an "authority" model.

Life is beautiful, with all its ups and the unavoidable downs. The curve balls, while unexpected, are usually manageable - that is until it no longer feels that way. A person may feel empty, tired, depressed, anxious or angry (possibly all at the same time) and the world, suddenly or gradually, loses its colors. When stressful times strike us, our mind tends to recall old wounds. Once open, these wounds may present as feeling of a loss of control, anger, apathy, anxiety, depression. Healing and getting back to ourselves may feel hopeless - but it's not.

Through her compassionate, approachable, and warm demeanor, Allyson creates a safe, supportive environment that allows you to show up as your most authentic self. She acknowledges that your experiences, thoughts, and emotions are unique to you. She encourages you to take control of your narrative as you work together to achieve your goals. It’s common for anyone starting therapy to feel vulnerable and unsure, especially when they don't know what to expect or how it will benefit them. This uncertainty can feel overwhelming, and worrying that things might never improve, even with professional support, is entirely understandable.

Over the years, I have come to understand that many of our difficulties with work and/or relationships can be traced to some forms of disconnection internally and externally, sometime manifested as depression, anxiety, existential angst, eating disorder, or addiction. I view therapy as a continuous in-depth conversation with another person in order to mend past traumas, reconnect with self and others, and develop a new perspective on life. I will bring to this journey curiosity, compassion, knowledge, experiences, and a commitment to help you strive for a healthier and more balanced life.

Rather than helping you work around your inner life, psychotherapy invites you into it. Modern, cosmopolitan life advertises coping as something we should get better at—as though enough "strategies" or "skills" will quiet the parts of ourselves we'd rather not feel. My approach is different. We become curious about the conflicts, fears, and longings that have shaped your patterns, not to dwell in them, but so they no longer have to operate outside of your awareness. What once felt intolerable gradually becomes something you can understand, hold, and move through.

Psychoanalytic Therapists
Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.
How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.
Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.
Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
