Psychodynamic Therapists in Katonah, NY

Suzanne M Gabriele
Psychologist, PhD
Katonah, NY 10536
My therapeutic modality is psychodynamic/ psychoanalytic and my style is best described as supportive and challenging, warm and direct.
Life inevitably involves struggle. The goal of therapy is to understand the source of your current struggles in order to live more fully and effectively. In my experience, life difficulties are either long standing or acute. The enduring difficulties are often the result of underlying patterns that result in feeling stuck, anxious or depressed. These patterns may manifest in relationship problems, parenting difficulties or low self esteem. Acute situations, such as death or divorce, take time to process and can trigger earlier losses. In either situation, the wish to function and feel better is what motivates us to seek therapy.

Everyone deserves to have space for themselves. I believe that the therapeutic space is highly valuable for personal growth, the development of further insights and a place to find support. Whether you are seeking therapy to address a specific concern, or looking to gain a deeper understanding of yourself, therapy can offer you a space to be seen and heard in a genuine, meaningful way. My practice comes from both a psychoanalytic approach as well as from a creative lens. I offer a safe and non-judgmental space where you can express yourself fully and honestly.

I’m so excited to be re-launching my private practice—now with a different spin —after eleven long years. Why the hiatus? Well, life unfolded in an unexpected way. If you are a parent of a child with autism, a developmental disorder, or other special needs, I have a feeling you know exactly what I’m talking about. Whereas in the past I worked as a therapist for children with severe emotional disturbances, I now feel a different calling. My mission is to help your family emotionally process your child’s diagnosis and assist you in finding the services you need for your child and your family to thrive.

With the continuing rise in anxiety and depression, it is becoming increasingly more important to go inward and pinpoint what is weighing on you. In therapy, we will uncover the source of your pain, resolve problems with self-acceptance, and correct negative re-occurring patterns. We will eliminate the barriers that have been preventing you from living up to your fullest potential and achieving deep fulfillment in life. With hard work and my expertise, success is possible regardless of past circumstances. My interventions are grounded in Trauma and Attachment theory and the body-mind connection.

Managing emotions can be really difficult. At times it can be isolating when we feel others will not understand the struggle we are experiencing. My goal is to provide a comfortable and safe space for individuals to share thoughts and experiences that have been difficult to process with loved ones. My work as a therapist is very much guided by the individual who I am working with. I believe that therapy is a collaborative process. My role is to create an environment that allows individuals to feel supported in the process of gaining a deeper understanding of themselves.

Starting psychotherapy is a brave step towards change. Finding the right psychotherapist can be challenging. In your initial consultation we can discuss the reasons that bring you in, what you expect to get out of treatment, and a plan that suits your needs. We can also discuss scheduling and fees. All with the goal of finding out if I am a good fit for you. I have expertise working with adults struggling with relationship issues, life transitions, and family conflict. I believe that in psychotherapy a person's relationship patterns can be understood and reconfigured, giving way to new ones.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
