I have been in clinical practice for over 20 years working with individuals,
couples
and families.
Life inevitably involves struggle. The goal of therapy is to understand the source of your current struggles in order to live more fully and effectively. In my experience, life difficulties are either long standing or acute. The enduring difficulties are often the result of underlying patterns that result in feeling stuck, anxious or depressed. These patterns may manifest in
relationship
problems, parenting difficulties or low self esteem. Acute situations, such as death or divorce, take time to process and can trigger earlier losses. In either situation, the wish to function and feel better is what motivates us to seek therapy.

I see individuals with anxiety, depression, mood disorders, personality disorders, marital problems,
relationship
issues, interpersonal problems, family conflict, parent-child issues, and work problems.
I started as a staff psychologist in 1973 working at South Beach Psychiatric Center, an outpatient clinic in Brooklyn. In my 21 years there, I rose to the position of clinic director, which I held for 6 years before leaving. After moving to Westchester County, I became the director of the Clinic and Day Hospital Outpatient Programs of Rockland Psychiatric Center in White Plains. After 8 years as director, I left in 2003 and then worked for 10 years as a staff psychologist and supervisor of psychology interns and externs at Westchester Jewish Community Services in Hartsdale. I maintain a private practice in Katonah.

Attention...what does it take to get our attention? Usually, it's something unfamiliar. I work with individuals who experience a "symptom," a grief, a depression, an anxiety, a life-threatening illness, a crisis in an important
relationship
; a time when you are asked to pause, to pay attention to your self and bring curiosity to your life. A symptom is an invitation to look at the story of your life and visit where you have felt alone and where you need to come home to yourself in order to make this issue transform and experience more fulfillment.

Why is it that the most important
relationship
in our lives is often the one that gets the least attention? Self-care is so essential, and yet many of us leave it for last or skip it all together. Many of us in today’s society feel enormous pressure to do and have it all, often at the expense of our happiness and mental health. The resulting anxiety, stress, and depression can be difficult to manage on your own. In my practice, I focus on the therapeutic
relationship
and interpersonal connection, as I believe that trust and an open dialogue are the first steps in achieving meaningful change.

I believe that therapy is a partnership. Together, we can explore the issues that are concerning you and the things you would like to change in your life. Through therapy we can identify and remove old beliefs, patterns and fears that get in the way of fully enjoying life. We can work in a variety of ways, from very deep work that aims to heal childhood trauma, to cognitive-behavioral techniques which address specific, practical problems.
My approach is relaxed, supportive, holistic, empowering and nonjudgmental. I work with a range of issues: addictions, depression, anxiety,
relationship
and family difficulties and trauma.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
