Being human isn't easy. Being with other humans can be even more difficult! Looking for new ways to deal with the challenges of life, relationships, and the negative repetitive patterns in your own brain? Sometimes it helps to talk to someone in a non-judgmental, open and curious way to help sort things out, explore new ground, practice new responses to the same old patterns, or know yourself (and a loved one) in a new way.

Motherhood can feel a lot heavier than anyone prepared you for. Maybe you’re constantly overstimulated, snapping more easily than you want to, feeling touched out, emotionally exhausted, anxious, or wondering why you don’t feel like yourself anymore. You love your children deeply — and you’re also overwhelmed by the invisible mental load, pressure, and nonstop demands of motherhood. If you’re struggling with mom rage, anxiety, birth trauma, pregnancy loss, or the fear of becoming your parents, you are not broken. Your nervous system may simply be carrying more than it was ever meant to hold alone.

Growing up, I was an observer who always wondered why people think and act the way they do. After studying psychology, I become passionate about using my new found knowledge to help others, and completed a Master's degree in Social Work. As a licensed clinician, I typically work with young adults who are are looking to overcome past traumas, going through life transitions, or are seeking help in learning to cope with daily stressors. I also thoroughly enjoying helping people find connections between past experiences and current thoughts/moods/behaviors.

Are you a master at faking a smile and answering with the cliché, “I’m fine,” even though you are drowning in constant ANXIETY, overwhelm, SADNESS, or hopelessness? Maybe you CAN’T SLEEP, worrying about all the “what ifs.” Your body may be riddled with with muscle TENSION, and you wonder if that’s connected to your chronic pain/illness. Hi, I'm Mel Joy, a healer with 25+ years of experience witnessing how resilient people can be. We all experience ebbs & flows of transitions and struggles, while constantly evolving. Life can be both beautiful & messy, and I'm humbled and honored to help you sort through it in individual and/or group therapy. Our minds & emotions uniquely shape our perception of reality. No two people have the same experience, and there is no such thing as a "one size fits all" treatment modality. No matter how different we may be, one thing we all share is the capacity for joy & pain, and everything in between.

Women's Issues Therapists
How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
