Have you been treated for depression or anxiety, but you still don't feel like yourself?
Maybe you've been told that if you just tried harder things will get better. I've been doing this a long time, and I can tell you it doesn't work that way. Deep down you know things will only get worse if something doesn't change.

Life can be unpredictable. Whether you’re a planner or live spontaneously, significant life events happen, and they often occur without warning and in situations that are beyond our control. We are all brought into this world by no choice of our own, and the environment we are raised in paves the way for how we cope with stress and adapt to changes and transitions in life; many which we may be unprepared for. We may be able to make some adjustments to change our path, but other times it’s not that easy and we might need a little extra support and guidance. And that’s ok!

Welcome to my profile! I am thrilled that you are taking the very first step towards "be better". While I believe therapy benefits everyone, it could be overwhelming in the beginning, so it's critical to develop a therapeutic relationship with an empathetic, genuine, patient, and attuned therapist who will walk by your side, find your undiscovered wisdom and strength, heal your emotional wounds, apply practical strategies to resolve conflicts and problems. I am a bilingual (English/Chinese) therapist with years of psychotherapy experience at both community-based clinics and major hospitals, and well-trained in CBT/DBT/ERP.

You might be feeling like everyone else seems to know what they are doing in this life and yet, you are internally struggling against everything. There might be the struggle of consistent fatigue, confusion at your own reactions and an unsettled feeling from the decisions you are trying to make. There are moments where you might set a goal, or five, but you seem to fall short. Or you become bored with the process of meeting those goals. You are noticing that your body does not really feel like your own body and you are looking for anything to help you come back to being you.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
