I am compassionate, approachable and practical, working toward empowering clients to learn healthy coping skills to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships. I work collaboratively with individuals, providing a safe and warm environment allowing them to explore issues that may interfere with their daily lives or where they may be feeling stuck. We look at ways of increasing confidence, developing more satisfying relationships, learning new coping skills by exploring possible self defeating patterns and areas for growth.

In my 40 year career, I have focused on the educational, social and emotional needs of children in the preschool and elementary years. You may have concerns about your child's development. School personnel may be recommending an evaluation by a psychologist to clarify your child's challenges. You may feel that the school district is not adequately responsive to your child's needs, and want to learn how to navigate the special education system. You may be looking to supplement a psychological evaluation completed by the school. As a parent, you may be feeling overwhelmed and seek guidance to support your child's development.

I am sure that finding a therapist at this moment is difficult for you. One wants to choose a therapist who has just the right sensibility. Having been in practice for 30 years has taught me to be present and listen carefully to your needs. As a Family Therapist I think about all the elements that influence and impact your life, your work, your family and your friends. As a Systemic Thinker I know that your attachment to others and your interpersonal skills determine how you feel. I hope you will consider this as you search for a new therapist.

A clinical psychologist with experience in both hospital settings and private practice, I develop a compassionate and non-judgmental rapport with people. The course of treatment is never doctrinaire or pre-determined, but dependent on the patient's temperament, life history and goals. If a patient is seeking treatment that is more ruminative and exploratory: that's fine. If a patient feels that an active and problem solving therapy holds promise, that's fine too. The essential thread, across any particular approach, is to link the narrative of a patient's life to behavioral patterns and improved choices, which reduces anxiety and heightens fulfillment.

I am a Columbia University trained psychotherapist and have been practicing therapy for the past 16 years. My style of practice is interactive and relational. This means we will work together and build a relationship from which we can work through what you need help with. I tend to be transparent and will share my thoughts with you. This will be an active therapy experience where we will use our smarts and strengths collaboratively to bring about change. My post graduate training in couple and family therapy gives me a deep understanding of how to help individuals, couples and families struggling with relationship issues.

Deciding to begin therapy can be a turning point in your life. I work with children, adolescents and adults using supportive and insight-oriented psychotherapy for issues related to adjustment and stress (e.g. anxiety, depression) as well as specializing in conditions that affect the brain (e.g. learning disorders , ADHD, brain injury, memory problems). As a clinical psychologist and a neuropsychologist, I have specialized dual training in brain behavior relationships and take a psychodynamic approach when working with clients therapeutically. I also integrate cognitive behavioral techniques to help my clients meet their treatment goals.

I often work with people with temperament and learning differences, such as shyness, high intensity, sensory sensitivity, ADHD, and language difficulties, Such differences play an important role in emotional and behavioral functioning.
When children, teens, or young adults show mood or behavioral changes or are going through a difficult period of transition, I can help. In the supportive setting of therapy, we can find constructive ways to understand feelings, manage problem behaviors, and communicate effectively with others. We can work in a more open, exploratory way or a more structured, goal-oriented way depending on your individual needs. I also collaborate with parents and outside professionals for more wholistic care.

Through improving our ability to communicate, we strengthen the bonds in our relationships. First, we must engage in honest, self-reflection by examining and distinguishing our needs and wants. Once we have gained greater self-awareness, we can then focus on communicating with our partners and family members through respectful talking, listening, and reflection. It is through improved understanding that we create fertile ground for growth and development. Support groups are provide for high school and college students with disabilities and parents of special needs children.

My book "Uniquely Normal: Tapping the Reservoir of Normalcy to Treat Autism," won 5 awards, including the categories of "Psychology/Mental Health" and "Parenting and Family." The foreword is written by Temple Grandin. It has 27 case stories of people on the spectrum significantly improving. I start with an evaluation of the person's cognitive processes. I then develop an interactive therapeutic plan to affect the processing underlying the individual's behavior. My passions are getting children to speak for the first time and working with Asperger's young adults in establishing healthy relationships. I have also helped those not on the autism spectrum, to establish a healthy, romantic relationship. For children, I work with the school, including establishing the best placement and educational environment.

In my years of experience as a Clinical Social Worker, I have worked with many clients in multiple settings. What I have discovered is that as humans, we all shared similar emotional experiences. Emotions, such as sadness, anxiety, worries, trauma, and difficulty coping with everyday life stressors is arduous. Theses emotions can impair how we function, view the world, and how we perceive ourselves. While experiencing turmoil in our lives, many stigmatize mental illness and never seek help. Interestingly, I have discovered that when we are going through these challenging periods in our lives, professional help is essential.

Education and Learning Disabilities Therapists

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?

When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.

When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?

It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.

What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?

Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.

Are there medications for learning disabilities?

Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
