I help people see and appreciate their strengths. When we are compassionate with ourselves, we discover that even aspects of our personalities that get in our way have developed for good reasons. This understanding tends to quiet our self-criticism, opening the door for creative problem-solving and growth. As Carl Rogers famously said, “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”

A clinical psychologist with experience in both hospital settings and private practice, I develop a compassionate and non-judgmental rapport with people. The course of treatment is never doctrinaire or pre-determined, but dependent on the patient's temperament, life history and goals. If a patient is seeking treatment that is more ruminative and exploratory: that's fine. If a patient feels that an active and problem solving therapy holds promise, that's fine too. The essential thread, across any particular approach, is to link the narrative of a patient's life to behavioral patterns and improved choices, which reduces anxiety and heightens fulfillment.

Looking and finding a therapist can simultaneously be a daunting and hopeful process. Perhaps you're wondering How does therapy work? I believe it's our ability to create an authentic relationship as patient and therapist that matters most. We are two equal participants working to solve the problems you are struggling with. The goals are that you will know yourself better, develop the tools to change and accept those parts of yourself that get in the way of living, working and loving well.

Congratulations, you've taken the first step toward emotional well-being. Seeking help is a sign of strength. The pandemic took its toll on everyone. Some of us are only now recognizing the repercussions. I believe you'll find me empathic, curious and as a client once told me, "You care but keep it real." This is my second career; Journalism was my first. After years of working for a daily NYC paper I freelanced and raised my children. My life experience has enabled me to walk in many people's shoes.

Although it is sometimes difficult to make the first contact with a therapist if you can push through that resistance you will find an valuable source for understanding what it is that is preventing you from achieving your goals. Through the relationship; the knowledge the therapist possesses of psychological processes, the bond you will hopefully feel with this person who is your supporter and your ally but who is still able to have a neutral and honest view of your behavior you can grow and progress beyond what you can imagine.

I work with women who want to experience healing that goes deeper than just talking.
Your anxiety affects everything - your relationships, your self-esteem, your sleep. You're always the hard worker - but it's wearing you down. Slowing down feels impossible and your usual coping skills just aren't working anymore. You want to feel confident and in control of your emotions.

It must be overwhelming to see all these names. How to choose? And decisions tend to be harder when you're not feeling at your best. My suggestion: see who you're drawn to, then have a consultation with two or three people. It's so important to find the right match. Most good therapy takes place in the connection between patient and therapist. You need to feel you can share who you really are with one of us. Therapy is about emotional honesty, with yourself and others. Easy to say, harder to do. But it's worth the work.

I am a relational psychotherapist who works with individuals and couples. I believe that therapy is a process where we come together to create a unique relationship - one that provides the safe space in which we explore and understand your inner world. It is through this understanding that we create room for growth, change and well being. Therapy is your time to connect with and explore your authentic self.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
