Hi! I'm Erin Holmes. The clients who will use our services may be resistant to verbal expressions of therapy. They are interested in using a creative process to develop awareness of how self- care, impacts the relationships that we have with others, and the environment we create together. Persons of color, who have been traditionally marginalized or oppressed with no access to culturally relevant therapeutic services, will feel at home. Ultimately, our clients are interested in learning how their respective subcultures can strengthen their mind, body and spirit to assist them in moving through life's difficult transitions.

I see individuals and couples in my practice, most often for anxiety or unhappiness related to difficulty with relationships and life transitions.
I'm of the mindset that everyone can benefit from therapy. Each of us has unique worries and concerns that we 1) don't want to burden our friends and family with or 2) can't imagine anyone listening to without judgment. Therefore, choosing a therapist that you feel comfortable talking to is essential. The only way to truly benefit from therapy is to start off feeling understood, respected, and valued. With specific goals in mind I work with clients to explore their current situation from all angles - their history, current functioning, underlying feelings, and strategies/skills to achieve the change they desire.

I am a trauma and grief therapist as well as a mediator and parenting coordinator working with individuals and couples during all phases of the divorce process.
Our thoughts, beliefs and bodies reflect our emotional struggles. We often come to therapy when old ways of coping aren't working anymore- when we long for comfort, relief, or more authentic and deeper connections in our relationships. The whole person needs to be addressed in times of crisis, transition and loss. Healing is a word derived from the German hailjan- “to make whole.” I work with a holistic, acceptance-based and contemplative approach to psychotherapy. Practicing self-compassion and self- acceptance lead to less reactivity and more peaceful, integrated and intentional lives.

Everyone tells you how impressive you are. Your coworkers are always asking for your advice and praising your accomplishments. Friends wonder aloud how you easily maintain such a beautiful home and happy family. Your life seems perfect (but “seems” is the operative word.) The truth is, you feel like you’re barely holding it all together. That shiny, flawless veneer hides a far darker reality. You're constantly burdened by a deep sadness and overwhelming anxiety. You live in fear that you’ll be exposed as an imposter. You desperately want to tell people how you’re feeling, but how could they understand when you seem to “have it all”?

Marriage Counseling Therapists
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
