At our sessions, we'll be using a blend of two powerful techniques: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solutions-Oriented Brief Treatment (SOBT). CBT helps us understand how your thoughts affect your feelings and behaviors, while SOBT focuses on finding practical solutions to the challenges you're facing. Together, we'll work on both managing your current struggles and building skills to navigate future ones. It's about finding the balance between understanding what's going on and taking action to make positive changes in your life."

The combination of my work with the early childhood and maturing populations provides a unique insight into hu man behavior and feelings across the age spectrum.
I am a psychologist with over thirty years experience treating childhood disorders. My experience has been that early childhood therapy and parent-training are most effective, and emotional healing occurs most readily, when parent and child are seen together. Focus during, and between sessions, involves teaching of play skills and modeling of effective limit setting. For older children, self modulation of behavior is a primary objective. Utilizing these techniques, I have successfully treated anxiety problems (such as selective mutism), depressive symptoms, and developmental disorders (such as Aspergers Syndrome).

If things are not going well or you don't feel the way you'd like to feel, a good therapist can help. I think it's important to take a practical approach to therapy, especially in the beginning. Let's get you feeling better. I'll build your confidence in yourself and in your direction. I will teach you skills that you can practice in between sessions that build on what we discuss. From there, we can work together to figure out the origins of your symptoms and develop a better understanding of who you are so that we can work on who you want to be and how you want to feel for the rest of your life.

Especially for some of the most successful among us, we can hold ourselves to the highest standards of perfor mance in all areas. Sometimes we may feel that we're supposed to have all the answers to the challenges life throws our way, even when that isn’t always possible. An achievement focus can come at the expense of other areas of our lives. I see therapy as a collaborative experience. I work with individuals and couples to help unlock what holds them back to gain an understanding of how our histories shape our present, while building a foundation of skills in the here-in-now to promote healing and a future that is self-defined.

I pride myself on working with teenagers and adults who have not found success in previous therapy experiences. Over the past 26 years of my professional endeavors, I have prevented many families from having to send their teenagers to residential treatment centers, have helped families to remain intact, and have allowed individuals who fall within the Autism Spectrum Disorder to achieve full lives. My work with clients who have ADHD has allowed these individuals to be succesful in school, the community, within the family system, and within their workplace of choice.

Making the choice to go to therapy is not the easiest one you will ever make, but it is among the most powerful. Whether you are struggling to cope with recent changes in your life or have made the choice to address long-standing issues in a new way, finding someone who is able to provide an unbiased, thoughtful perspective can improve your life profoundly. All of us encounter obstacles and face difficulty. In response to that difficulty, we may develop coping strategies that no longer serve us.

Through non-judgmental discussion, you and I can clarify your concerns and foster new possibilities in your life, manifesting more options to be happy.
Your inner world is unique; the things that make you happy as well as those that make you feel unhappy. Navigating self, family, friendship, work and love gets complicated - this comes with the territory of being hu man. We strive to fulfill our personal and professional life-dreams but sometimes it feels impossible. I have learned that it is usually more possible than we think. My mindful psychoanalytic approach examines and reconciles our past and our present, ultimately helping us feel more free to create a new future through the discovery of our most authentic self.

I also specialize in sex and marital therapy, having spent over 20 years at one of the leading Hu man Sexuality Programs in the country.
I really enjoy working with people who want to be helped with painful feelings and experiences that have interfered with their sense of well being. All of us are limited by upsettingly negative emotions that make it harder to accomplish things that would make our lives richer, more comfortable and secure. I base my work on the principles of Mindfulnes Based Cognitive Behavior Therapy. This approach has been shown to be very successful helping anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, phobias and many other individual and relationship issues. Like most experienced therapists, I also integrate ideas from other approaches whenever appropriate.

Many of my patients are troubled by low self-esteem. We are often hard on ourselves and need to learn to be more accepting of our own limitations. Being compassionate with ourselves goes hand in hand with becoming kinder and more caring with others. The most common emotional disturbances that lead people to seek therapy are anxiety, depression, and anger management problems. The solution to these troubles involve four categories of irrational thinking. They are tyrannical shoulds, poor frustration tolerance ( I can't stand it), awfulizing/catastrophizing, and harsh rating of ourselves (putting ourselves down).

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
