In the last few years, we have all had to manage our lives in addition to the added stress and anxiety brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic. From my 10 years of experience working in residential, outpatient therapy clinics, and lastly, nursing homes during COVID-19, it became clear to me that this pandemic was going to lead to an additional crisis. A mental health crisis. So many have felt the need to be strong and carry on and now that we are moving forward, the mental health toll remains. I started this telehealth private practice in order to provide psychotherapy services to all those who need it and to provide easy access.

I believe there is strength to be found in our weaknesses, love to be found through our pain, and light after our darkest days. The pain of healing comes with the self-awareness that otherwise may be over looked. When it becomes more painful to stay in our past then it is scary to step out of it is when the journey begins. I walk beside my clients, not in-front or behind. I remain steady and follow their lead. I provide the safety and hope that everyone needs to face their pain, to feel their pain, and to keep going anyway.

Working directly with the LGBTQIA+ community in Greenwich Village at The Center for five years I assisted clients dealing with depression, anxiety, gender, sexuality, and substance misuse.
Change is never easy. Using a psychodynamic and humanistic approach in my career, I’ve regularly experienced how transformative self-discovery and introspection can be; and I believe everyone has the innate ability to carry out change in their own lives to gain clarity and recovery through that same process. For sixteen years, as a Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor, I worked with clients individually and in group sessions from culturally diverse backgrounds. In 2022, I also had the great experience of providing direct counseling services to middle and high school students at the Renaissance Charter School.

I am a member of the LGBTQ community, I am kink and polyamory informed, and I strive to help marginalized communities.
You are here. Here is not where you want to be, whatever ‘here’ means to you. The bridge from ‘here’ to ‘there’ is change. If you’re uncertain of how to navigate the road ahead, my goal is to meet you ‘here’, and find the best collaborative approach to get you to the ‘there’. You may be managing life changes, dealing with mental health concerns like anxiety, depression, or many others. You may be a part of a group I specialize in, such as the LBGTQ+ community, kink and polyamory communities, and other marginalized and intersecting identities, but all are welcome. All you need is an open mind and we can work towards that change.

I work a lot with BIPOC and LGBTQ+ clients.
As they say, the only thing permanent in this world is change. Change, like people, comes in different shapes and sizes. It could be as simple as changing clothes, to more complex ones like a break up, death, or coming out. My goal is to help you manage and deal with changes in your life. By providing you with a safe and comfortable environment and my use of various therapeutic techniques, my hope is that you will feel supported, heard, understood, and obtain the necessary coping skills to help you through this journey called life.

I have extensive, advanced training and experience in trauma recovery, sex therapy, and trans-affirming care.
I work well with individuals and couples+ who understand and appreciate therapy as a conversation. I connect with clients who march to the beat of their own drum- whether they always like it or not. And I find success with people who want to grow, who may suspect or recognize their tools for handling life aren’t working as well as they used to.

Jack Haines is a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in the treatment of LGBTQ individuals and couples.
In order to grow, we need a deeper understanding of the patterns and beliefs we wish to change. It's a process that happens best without harshness or criticism. I encourage clients to start by noticing the part of themselves they want to change. Once we understand that part better, we can then consider changing it.

LGBTQ+ Therapists
Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?
Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.
Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?
Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.
How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?
You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?
Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.
Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?
While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
