Our human emotional experience is complicated and can sometimes get in the way of our goals or our relationships. We often judge our reactions or ourselves for having them because they can lead to impulsivity or emotional suffering, and of course we would prefer to avoid this. If we can learn to experience our thoughts, feelings, and actions in the moment without judgment or assumption, we can learn to work with our emotions, accept things we wish were different and more effectively enact change. This allows us to focus on what we can control to work towards your goals for yourself, relationships, and life.

We've all have some type of trauma in our life, whether it be something that affected us for a couple days, or something that we cannot stop thinking about after so many years. People often underestimate the effects of trauma. Many people have a fear of reaching out for help, a fear of being judged when they voice their feelings to their loved ones. I am here to create a safe and confidential environment for you to process your emotions.

As a therapist I desire to provide my clients an atmosphere where they feel safe to share, uncover, and learn about themselves by establishing a therapeutic relationship.  I use empathy and understanding to work collaboratively in order to individualize your sessions. Life can feel overwhelming, therapy can feel overwhelming, I strive to empower you by determining the tools and strategies you need for your personal growth.  In the words of Brené Brown “daring greatly means the courage to be vulnerable. It means to show up and be seen. To ask for what you need. To talk about how you’re feeling. To have the hard conversations".

My approach is to offer a judgment-free space where you can openly discuss what is distressing to you. I have worked with people from all walks of life and enjoy learning about my clients’ backgrounds to develop unique ways to help them. I work with you to discover the best solutions for yourself rather than simply providing answers. From there, I help you explore ambivalence about change and challenge unhelpful thought patterns that may hinder growth.

Just another PT profile, right? Let's look closer...I know you've been trying to find a therapist & someone you can connect with. I understand this can be overwhelming, especially with what you're already going through. I'm a licensed therapist that happens to be a flawed human. While there is a wide array of issues that I treat, I'm most interested in helping other humans address issues with complex/chronic trauma, substance use, & chronic pain/illness. I also have a passion for working with other therapists who are wanting to find the best match for their unique needs while appreciating the nuance of therapists in therapy.

To help you choose a therapist that is right for you, let me discuss several points that distinguish my approach from many other therapists. First, unlike many therapists, I am interactive and provide you with useful feedback. Many clients have told me they have tried therapy before but "didn't get much out of it." They often say the therapist sat by silently and passively. By contrast, when working with me you will know I am energetically moving us forward. If this sounds appealing to you, we are probably going to be a good match.

Personality Disorders Therapists
What are the common treatment options for personality disorders?
Personality disorders are typically treated with psychotherapy, sometimes in conjunction with medication. Therapy can help people with personality disorders develop skills to tolerate difficult emotions, navigate interpersonal relationships, and solidify their sense of self. Medications can treat symptoms that co-occur with the disorder, such as depression, anger, aggression, and impulsivity.

When to seek treatment for personality disorders?
Even though treatment for personality disorders can be an uphill battle, it’s best to seek help if you suspect that you or a loved one is struggling with one, because personality disorders can create substantial problems in life. Symptoms depend on the specific disorder, but overall signs of personality disorders include consistent difficulty maintaining close relationships, dramatic variations in self-esteem, and an unstable sense of identity.

How long does therapy take for personality disorders?
The timeline for treating personality disorders isn’t as clear-cut as it is for other disorders. Change can be difficult, taking from around one year to five, 10, or more. The key is finding a therapist who has extensive experience treating the relevant disorder. For example, a psychologist who specializes in narcissistic personality disorder has specific communication strategies that allow them to sustain the relationship and be more effective with narcissistic patients.

Can therapy help people with personality disorders?
Research suggests that for those who are motivated to address concerns or interpersonal conflict related to a personality disorder, therapy is far more effective than no treatment, and that most people in therapy see improvements. However, since personality disorders involve entrenched elements of identity, they are less responsive to treatment than are other mental health conditions. Finding an expert who has extensive experience working with a given personality disorder is one factor that increases the likelihood of successful treatment.
