Hi! My name is Carma. I have the requisite clinical degrees, trainings and certifications, but more importantly, I know what it is like to survive trauma. Hence, my clinical approach to therapy has a different spin: it's rooted in peer therapy.
Peer counseling means I'm not using sessions to process my "stuff". Rather, the peer-lived experience offers a way to resonate with the clinical knowledge I share. I use carefully chosen stories of trauma healing journeys, along with standard therapeutic interventions, as ways to engage with clients. I have additional peers on my team.

You can see your patterns clearly, but that hasn't made them easier to change. Slowing down doesn't feel safe. Hard things haven't scared you, but a relationship, a quiet moment, or a “boring” Tuesday sometimes does.
I specialize in complex trauma, identity, and nervous system-informed therapy. The people I tend to work with look fine from the outside. Better than fine, often. High-functioning, competent, holding a lot together. And completely exhausted by the distance between who they are in a room full of people and what's actually going on underneath that. Often that includes veterans, first responders, and career professionals.

Everyone struggles from time to time with challenges in life and sometimes they're hard for us to overcome alone. These challenges can include anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, ADHD, and trauma. All of these challenges can have a direct impact on our daily lives. How we manage them is what will make the difference between feeling stuck and being able to move on. It's important to recognize when to seek support and likewise feel unashamed to do so. It can be difficult to take that first step because sometimes it's not easy for us to feel comfortable opening up to a stranger. That's okay, it's normal to feel that way!

I believe that each person holds within themselves everything they need to heal and grow in the ways they would like. I see the therapist's role as being one in which provides an environment of safety and care where the client can explore themselves authentically. It is through this authentic exploration, that the therapist can help the client discover how patterns and ways of being are keeping the client stuck and resulting in suffering. By bringing into awareness these aspects, the client and therapist can then work collaboratively to release the pain and explore new ways of being.

Just another PT profile, right? Let's look closer...I know you've been trying to find a therapist & someone you can connect with. I understand this can be overwhelming, especially with what you're already going through. I'm a licensed therapist that happens to be a flawed human. While there is a wide array of issues that I treat, I'm most interested in helping other humans address issues with complex/chronic trauma, substance use, & chronic pain/illness. I also have a passion for working with other therapists who are wanting to find the best match for their unique needs while appreciating the nuance of therapists in therapy.

Let's explore your relationship with the negative aspects of human experience. As you look inward with honesty and without harsh judgement you can find yourself closer to your true self.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists
How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.
Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.
How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
