Everyone can benefit from having a trusting relationship and receiving validation. From that basis, in a non-judgmental interaction people can begin to get clarity on their wants and needs. From enhancing self-esteem to setting boundaries and resolving anxiety/depression people can change.

The suffering we experience is so personal we tend not to want to share it. How can we open up about something that shakes us so? How can we bring someone into our pain? Psychotherapy, as I practice, is a gentle and respectful way that you can begin to approach changing those things that burden you. I provide a safe, trusting relationship where you are able to learn to comfortably live life again.

In addition to helping people with anxiety, depression, and relationship and interpersonal challenges, I have specialized training treating substance use and other compulsive behavior difficulties and supporting family members.
I get it. Searching for a therapist is overwhelming, exhausting, and all the profiles sound the same. To help you decide whether to reach out, here is what you can expect from me, aside from a non-judgmental, come-as-you-are, therapeutic space. First, I am an active therapist who will ask questions and challenge you. Second, I provide direct, honest feedback; I won’t dodge your questions without explanation. Third, humanness: No blank stares or awkward silences. Fourth, humor (but no knock-knock jokes).

Reaching out for help can be scary. I aim to make that process a smooth one with support and encouragement. I am a Clinical Social Worker with 30 years of experience as a therapist. My clients come to me with a wide range of concerns, such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, illness in themselves or a loved one, and much more. What I see time and time again that they have in common is a feeling of powerlessness. Whether it be over their symptoms, their family members, relationships and even themselves. I help them to understand themselves and their circumstances more fully.

Getting to the root of your pain: learning to deal with it, building upon your strengths then learning to act versus react to people and events, takes a mindfulness that I will help you develop. I have a long history of working with diverse populations, who have developed varied problems: Mental Health, Substance Abuse, Marital, Parenting, Trauma, and more. My approach is to work with my client’s strengths; help them develop new views and skills and then organize them into a plan that works for them in obtaining their goals. I also have associates through my group Serenity Psychotherapy LLC to provide the best match for you.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
